I am on my pre-op diet and it's very specific as to what I can and cannot eat as well as how much I can eat. With the holidays coming up I'm not necessarily worried about straying from my diet I'm more worried about everyone offering me food or asking why I'm not eating as much.

Thanksgiving I will be spending at my sisters and the people that will be there know that I'm on a specific diet given to me by my doctor but nothing more. Christmas on the other hand had me so stressed out that I just decided not to go. Christmas is usually a big thing with my mom's side of the family so there will be a lot of extended family members there that I don't plan on sharing my surgery with until I'm post-op. I feel bad that I'm not going but there's no way I can control how the food is prepared and I don't want to bring my own meals and have to explain myself to everyone there.

Has anyone else run into this problem with deciding whether or not to go to a family function for the holidays? And if you do decide to go what is your plan for sticking to the diet? Have you thought of what you'd say if someone offered you food or asked why you aren't eating that much?

I have decided to skip heading to my parent's house for the celebration at Thanksgiving this year. I'll be on my second day of puree, and being around the feast and family favorites would be hard. It's also a 3 hour drive each way. I'm currently out of work and have appointments on Saturday and the following Monday (surgery follow-up) so I'm just not going to go.

I think you made the right decision, I'm sitting here holding off on my last class because I want surgery in January. I already have to maintain my weight during the holidays but I couldn't imagine doing a fast right now... you're a champ!

I'm scheduled for surgery on 12/19. My family is putting Christmas off until 12/31 (not just for me, but so my sister can travel to her in-laws for the actual holiday).

The plan is for everyone to come over to our house for an hour or two for gift exchange early, then go over to my mom's (15 minute drive) for the meal. That way I don't have to smell or see the feast! I imagine after having the kids and chaos at my house I'll be ready for a nap, and my husband can join my family for dinner.

My family is very supportive, but I'm also fortunate because we're all local.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
