Surgery Length & Unable To Do Laproscopic?

Recommended Posts

How long did your actual RNY/bypass take?

And was anyone's surgeon unable to do your surgery laproscopically? My surgeon said at my pre op appt last week that my body type (short & fat) was the most difficult to operate on and sometimes (but not often) they find they can't do it laproscopically once they begin.

Hi LaLa Weez

I am 5.4 and had mine laparoscopically. I had mine Sep 2, 2013. I had quite a bit of scar tissue so it did take them 45minutes just to get thru it. But all went well. Here are my STATS: HW 249 this time I was up to 285#'s but managed to lose down to the 249 SW 232 LW 117 CW 125 I got to my goal weight in 6 months so I have maintained my loss for 2 and 1/2 years. I hope you get awesome results from your upcoming surgery.

My bypass took just over an hour. I, too, am short and fat (not as fast anymore! ), and my surgeon never mentioned not being able to do it laproscopically. It wasn't even a question.

I'm 5'4, and I am very short waisted (my ribs and my hips almost touch. The size of my baby belly defied belief, because she had nowhere to go but out). My doc had zero problems with my surgery being done lap. I was under for two hours and five minutes for a duodenal switch, gallbladder removal, and liver biopsy. Plus an unexpected excision of some lymph nodes.

My surgeon said that he rarely has to open someone up but he must always let patients know that it could happen.

Sorry my RNY was on July 2, 2013. My hubby's failed revision was in Sept of 2013

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
