Exercise regimen before surgery

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for a sleeve revision from the band December 16th. Yay! My question is, will it be easier for me to start an exercise plan before my surgery or will it not matter because I cant exercise for a while after anyways.....yes I know all exercise is healthy, but what can you still even do post op....and when?

I was walking about 5 miles a day pre-op. I was able to begin serious walking (defined as more than just walking up and down the hall in my building) about a week-post. I started at 2 miles, and I have worked my way up to 3 miles over time. I think the exercise pre-op really helped me in the long run.

Yep surgery and after was easier thanks to being in decent shape before.

It is important to walk around 30 minutes per day before and after surgery. I began walking every day around a year prior to surgery. Immediately after my operation, I was walking the hallways every two hours around the clock and I continued to exercise every day for the first year after surgery. Walking improves your recovery time and also minimizes the level of pain you will endure from the operation.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
