Every. Single. Night. Severe heart burn. I have a good pain tolerance, but this is bringing me to tears every night. I'm afraid to drink anything. I'm afraid to take medicine. I tried taking it in the morning today, but I needed to take another pain pill tonight - heart burn. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I take 40mg of prilosec in the morning, and have been taking 20mg in the evening when this kicks in. I'm not tolerating drinking much. I'm lucky if I get 10oz of Water a day (and that's generous). I'm one week post-op. If you have had this issue or know how I might counteract it, or know if maybe something is wrong....please please help. I'm miserable and sick of crying in pain every night.

Severe heartburn is a recognized side effect of VSG. I was forced to revise to bypass to cure my heartburn. I would call your surgeon and see if they can put you on a different PPI. You may need to try different medication combinations to find one that gives you some relief.

Also, try to drink something other than plain Water. Plain water gave me horrible heartburn. You need to drink because dehydration won't help you at all. In fact, it will make you feel worse. Good luck!

Prilosec did nothing for me. I take Nexium before I go to bed otherwise I have heartburn. You might have to try a few things before you find something that works but also don't be afraid to let your surgeon know. A few people have serious acid issues post surgery and your doc needs ti know. He might also be able to prescribe something stronger than over the counter meds.

Call your surgeon and ask for liquid of Calfatrate. You take before meals and at bedtime. It coats your stomach. I'm 8 days post op and started it yesterday. It has helped me tremendously!!

Good suggestions already. Try drinking a warm broth instead of just Water. I made an easy chicken broth in the slow cooker that was a life saver.

Thank you for the suggestions and support. I'm writing all this down as I meet with my surgeon tomorrow morning. I would LOVE relief from this. I've dealt with Gerd for years and years. Prilosec always worked. But I am hoping we can find something different. I can't live with this. I'd like to avoid moving to bypass surgery. We had decided against it because of the significant endometrial scarring that I have. However....as crazy as this sounds - I'd be ok with another surgery if it means more time off of work!!!!

I'd love a broth recipe!!!! I'm so sick of what I have. I dressed it up a bit tonight with a tiny bit of garlic and lemon pepper. but i'd prefer to make my own!

Super easy...2 ish pounds of chicken on the bone. Add an onion, carrots, celery, seasoning to taste. I used a large slow cooker and filled it with water and cooked on low all day. De bone chicken and can freeze for future use. Strain the broth. Can skim fat off after refrigerating but honestly there is very little fat. I added a little salt and pepper after cooking to taste. To me this tasted like real food and I always like warm liquids better than cold anyway.

My understanding was that people who suffer from GERD aren't great candidates for sleeve surgery and do better with a bypass.

Even people (like myself) who never had chronic heartburn can develop some heartburn post sleeve. If I drink too close to bedtime, I get some mild discomfort (not actual burning in the throat, but some warmness in my chest) but I am not taking anything yet, in the hopes my stomache will naturally start to produce less acid.

My doctor had me taking omeprazole (generic prilosec over the counter) for the couple months, but he also cautioned me that I shouldn't eat at least 2 hours before bedtime as laying down after eating would cause GERD/reflux flareups.

He took me off the omeprazole around 3 months as it isn't good to take long term, and as I had stopped having any issues except on rare occasions.

But I know if I forget to watch when I eat and try to go take a nap or go to bed, I will regret it.

I second this. Nothing else worked for me, except Nexium (Esomeprazole) 40mg. Tried 2-3 other PPIs, and I was suffering from sever reflux post op sleeve.

Nexium did the trick for me. It is long lasting, and it worked quickly.

I weaned myself of it very slowly, 2 months ago.

Now, 8 months post op, I don't have anymore reflux! Still keep the refilled script though, just in case, but so far, so good.

I was,a bit frustated with that comment and, I said, "No, at 58 years old im only doing this once". He said 1/3 of sleeve patients will still have gerd, and he has been seeing sleeve patients 3 to 4 years out with severe gerd and going the revision route because its very bad and happens daily. Thats why I decided the bypass route.

4 years sleeve post op. Had slight heartburn before my sleeve but nothing like this....I had an upper g.i. on Tuesday to find out the Fluid comes right back up and my sleeve has a slight twist in it I had a miscarriage last year and my gerd is now out of control. Submitting for bypass revision Nov 19th. I hope u feel better. I've taken allllll the medicines possible. I even went with natural remedies. Baking soda and apple cider vinegar to help. But it's useless. Im looking forward to relief and losing the last bit I have to hit goal. I still do not regret my sleeve !!!!!
