Does anyone on here have experience with Kaiser Norcal referring them for the DS recently? Particularly the Richmond facililty? I don't think that they do it in house. I've found a lot of people in forums who have had to fight and petition to get their referral, but none in the last 5 years. My BMI at orientation was 51. I meet with the surgeon soon, and I'd like to know if I should be gearing up for a fight. I'm at the very beginning of this adventure, and any and all advice would be much appreciated!

I went through Kaiser Richmond and due to my high bmi at the start (60) I was offered my choice of sleeve, bypass or DS but told they don't do DS there but would refer me if I wanted it. I wanted/had the sleeve though so I didn't get any additional information regarding the DS. I don't know what their cutoff is regarding bmi and DS but it may not be a battle.

AFAIK, Dr. Rabkin (Pacific Laparoscopy) still has the Kaiser Norcal contract for the DS, at least he did when I had my sleeve done with him, and the last time I went to one of his SF support groups (I'm in socal, so don't get up there often) there were several Kaiser people there on one side or the other of surgery. You might give PacLap a call and get their current take on the matter.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
