Post op depression

Recommended Posts

Well it has kicked in. The pain and trauma are there, starvation is there, dehydration. But weightloss is not there yet so i am feeling really guilty nine days out that I cannot do as much. I had hernia repair and slow healing. Then tore something inside. Feeling really useless, sore, tired. And yes grouchy. I havnt lost anymore weight since surgery so feel like this is a huge mistake. I know my hormones are crazy. Any body else in a funk.

Stop weighing, you're gonna drive yourself nuts. Don't weigh for another two weeks.

When your body needs to heal, it requires Water and Protein. If you're dehydrated, or you aren't getting enough Protein, you aren't going to heal as fast or as well...so focus on those two things and if necessary, just drink Protein shakes all day long.

Some depression after surgery is normal, your brain just lost a major coping mechanism, in all likelihood. You're going to be sluggish and tired as your body recovers. And yes, hormones get a little crazy, too...but a TON of the problem is going to be in your mind, and that's something you'll be continually addressing for the weeks and months to come.

If you had the sleeve, you should not be feeling anything remotely like "starvation." You may have an acid buildup in your stomach that makes it feel kind of like hunger pangs, but that's not hunger. The hunger comes from your mind. Keep putting Protein Shakes in yourself all day long every day and you won't feel much of an issue...but the acid buildup is a problem for some people, but my surgeon said it resolves itself over time and mine has gradually gotten better over the last six weeks. I still feel a little acid bite in my stomach from time to time when it's empty, but it's not hunger. My stomach doesn't growl. But if you have food on the brain, it's easy to mistake it for hunger.

But my biggest piece of advice other than drinking protein shakes all day long is, STAY OFF THE scale. Give yourself at least two more weeks before you step on it again. You are retaining all kinds of Water right now because you aren't putting enough in, and you retain water anyway post-op as part of the healing process.

I gained three Pounds..

Found out at the drs and nearly hit the roof!! But was told it'd all the Fluid retention from IV fluids load impatient and liquid diet plus my period and to not worry about it. Still. I felt devastated like I did something wrong. I did know that this is a common experience though...from other post here...

I am getting my fluids in via Protein drinks, Water, popsicles , skim milk, and now v8.

Twisting a muscle is a definite painful setback but it's temporary and you still need to walk some to heal that as well as have lots of Protein.< /p>

If you are in purees now. You have more options!!

Depression is evil but I bet you have some positive successes that you are looking over..

For me. I'm on only one of the four diabetes meds I was on. Taking two shots a day instead of five plus pills. Sure I'm on meds for other crap but this is huge especially bc my surgeon said he didn't think my diabetes would go into remission or close because of how long I've had it and how severe it is.

Being dehydrated will make you miserable without tge sleeve but with it, you will end up in the hospital if you don't take action . It's in your hands. You can drink electrolyte Water like smart water or diet Gatorade if you don't have sugar free issues like I do. You can suck on ice chips too and do popsicles and Decaf tea. liquid Soups, broths and work hard on getting in the higher end of protein bc that promoted healing the sleeve surgery as well as your muscle injury. And walk a little each day to help healing physical and emotionally.

I know you know all of this stuff but sometimes we need a reminder . It will get better...that's been the overarching message I've heard from people who have experienced all kinds of complications!!

I'm on day 10. My mood is very raw. I am tired and cranky. Poor hubby and kids can't seem to be able to stay out of my way. I feel so bad. I'm getting in all the Protein but struggle with Water. Have lost 9 pounds. Although I'm not hungry, I can't wait to be able to eat different foods.

I'm 7 weeks out. I've been at a stall since week 5. 265. Today I am 266.6 - I was ok with the stall but gaining felt really sh*tty. I am also very snappy with my husband who has been nothing but a saint.

Hang in there. It's normal.

Hormones have you all out of sorts. Drink more fluids and just apologize to your family.

I didnt lose in the first two weeks after surgery and had gained about a pound one week out. It was really frustrating and hard not to be dissappointed, but eventually things picked up and weight started dropping off.

I've had plateaus since then (in one right now) and I just have to stay patient and positive, follow the plan, and trust that the scale will move again. I know it's easier said than done, but you can do it!

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
