Which medical tests can I expect to undergo prior to surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi - I'm wondering if there are tests that are typical for those undergoing sleeve surgery, and perhaps atypical tests that could be done dependant on a specific patient.

When at my intake appt. the nurse said they would test me for reflux (a probe I'm assuming) because I've been prescribed medication for occasional reflux. This led to her suggesting that I would then be a better candidate for gastric bypass if I have reflux. This is something I couldn't do as I have bowel issues and I understand dumping is not uncommon in gastric bypass. I think maybe I ought to have gotten into a bit more detail on the issues I do have! I'll have more opportunities to do so though...

Thanks for the input!

I am pre-op and just went for upper gi, chest X-ray, and abdominal ultrasound. They also would've done sleep study if sleep apnea was an issue. I also have an upcoming cardiologist appt. I assume stress test and ekg will be done

I went thru Cleveland clinic and I truly believe what a scam. I kept getting referred to different doctors for clearance who ordered some pretty invasive tests which some carried hefty copays. I believe they took advantage of my desperation to get approval for this surgery.

Every test came back just fine.

Glad to learn I was a heathy fatty but still. What a racket.

Good luck.

I had to have an echo and stress test due to previous stroke, psych visit, nutrition class and the EGD and labs... BIGGEST ISSUE FOR ME WAS PASSING A NICOTINE TEST!!!

Nasty being a source of extra income to the doctors (grrr) but had to laugh at your healthy fatty comment - pretty much me !

You only dump if you eat the wrong things. My husband had the bypass 9-28-15 and has never dumped. Just fyi

See, I feel totally the other way. I'm glad my doctor has been thorough because we found out some issues we wouldn't have otherwise. My sister had a doctor 15yrs ago that just moved people through and she ended up in icu for a month.. Thankfully today she's good.. But that's partly why it's taken me so long to get to this point of surgery

My program will decline you if you smoke. They even do a test before surgery to determine if there is nicotine in your system. They made sure they stressed this fact at the seminar I attended.

My surgeon didn't make quitting a requirement for his sleeve patients unless they were very high BMI. However, quit beforehand if you can. I smoked up until the morning of the surgery and now I'm trying to quit. I haven't smoked since that morning which was 5 days ago but MAN, it's sooooo hard to quit when you're giving up so many things at once.

Wow - good for you! It would be a monumental task to quit smoking - but quitting while giving up so much - wow. I don't smoke but I did at one time, albeit close to 30 years ago! I couldn't be a smoker again - I saw what it did to my father - horrific things like losing a leg (and STILL trying to smoke after the surgery!). The addiction is terrible. His quality of life until he passed away was extremely poor. It didn't help that his spouse kept smoking even though he had gone through so much. My mom quit smoking about 30 years ago and she enjoyed good health until she recently passed (dementia). So it can be cleared from you system and you can gain those lost years back. Good luck to you!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
