Pessimistic Psychologist

Recommended Posts

Just had my psych evaluation and the dang psychologist is trying to convince me that I need to have bypass instead of sleeve. I've looked into this for years and she spent an hour with me. I really wanted to tell her to just shut up.

I would definitely talk with your surgeon, who is the subject-matter-expert. Your surgeon knows what is best for you.

She's not a surgeon right? Listen to them, not her. I had a similar experience with my primary care doctor telling me that I should use her new Protein shake program instead of having revision surgery. She doesn't know what she's talking about so I chose to not listen.

Your psychologist has neither the training nor the expertise to recommend one surgery over another. That's a decision for you to make with your surgeon.

Wow - that amazes me! A doctor can actually promote a sideline business in the states? I take it you mean by 'her new Protein Shake program' that it's her own product? Here in Canada a doctor cannot do anything but treat you. I know there are amazing doctors in the U.S. - don't get me wrong - I just found it so odd to read that a doctor is allowed to do that!

That must have been a difficult meeting for you - does this psychologist have specific training in bariatrics? From what I understand there are reasons why one surgery is better than another dependant upon issues a person may have - i.e. acid reflux, etc.

She introduced herself as a bariatric pain management psychologist. I guess that's what I get for accepting an 'alternate psychologist' to clear me for this requirement.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
