Gastric bypass pre-op diet

Hah.....if you are on liquid only staying full is a bit of a challenge. I was given a very strict liquid diet.

- Protein shakes up to 5 times per day ( i used carnation but if i had to do it over again i would use ready made premier Protein Shakes which have 30 grams of Protein and 160 calories)

- chicken or beef broth. At first i tried the can crap and it tasted like dirty dishwater so my bariatric nurse suggested i make a pot of homemade stock using chicken, carrots, onions, celery salt and pepper. Strain everything, keep the chicken meat for post surgery.

This was what kept me going the 2 weeks prior to surgery. I think i would have went off plan if not for this delicious homemade savory stock. Everything else was cloying sweet.

- SF popsicles which i hated and still do

-SF Jello which i hated and still do

- Crystal light which i simply cannot tolerated because of the aritificial sweeteners.

- lots and lots and lots of Water

I ended up drinking 3 shakes a day and the rest of the time i was either sipping Water or sipping hot broth. After day 3 it really didn't bother me at all.

However.....i had a whole new meaning of full and it was completely different to what i was used to. That is one thing most of us struggle with even after surgery trying to figure out what feeling full feels like. We were used to stuffing ourselves which is not necessary.

Best of luck to you!

Hey there, I'm having my surgery on Oct. 18 and just started my liquid diet on Monday. I have to say that if you just keep drinking the shakes (4 per day), I honestly haven't been that hungry. I get to eat a banana each day and let me tell you, man that tastes good after not eating all day. I really need to start drinking broth, but I haven't yet. Best of luck to you. This is NOT easy.

@@kblanc,

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! Praying that all goes well for you and others. I drink premier Protein shakes daily. I like all flavors except bananas and cream.

How many pre-op visits did you have to do?

I'm required to drink Bariatric fusion shakes (powder with skim milk) and they are actually one of the better shakes I've had. What's helping me with hunger is drinking a lot of Water. The head hunger is brutal though.

I had mine with Water yesterday it was disgusting lol I tried it with 1% milk and it tasted better

I'm on the same as you but only required to do it for one week! I'm not big on broth cuz of the sodium but I will be trying a cream Soup to see how I like it

@@kblanc I realized I'm allowed low fat milk instead of skim - it was like someone told me I could have a steak and baked potato for supper! LOL

Oh yea I didn't know I could have milk until I looked at my list I drank my first Protein shake with Water and it was nasty so I looked at my papers and seen I could have milk so I was like heck yea I can do this lol

My surgery is on Oct 17th and luckily I am not required to do the liquid pre-op diet. I plan on drinking shakes for Breakfast and dinner the week prior anyway. The powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate Splendor Protein powder mixed with milk is delicious.

Also if you go on the Bariatric Foodie website, she has great recipes for adding flavor to Protein Shakes.< /p>

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
