Underactive thyroid and weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I met with my surgeon on Monday and he told me I would probably lose weight slower because of my thyroid. I was wondering if others with underactive thyroid have had any problems losing weight after their surgery?

I agree with your surgeon, I lost weight slowly and never made it to goal. I got as low 167 and wore a size 10.

I am at my two year mark and have gained 8 pounds. I am working hard to try to lose the weight but it's extremely difficult. I am now in a size 12. But honestly, despite the slow weight loss and regain I am extremely grateful for this gift. I know without a doubt, had I not had the surgery, I would be larger than a size 20-22 ( my pre-sleeve size).

I will say, however, there are people with underactive thyroid who have been very successful, everyone is different.

My advice to anyone considering this surgery, especially someone with under active thyroid, is to make the first year really count. Follow your doctors orders and work out. Do not take the rapid loss for granted it will come to a screeching halt.

Best wishes

I am nearly 5 months out from my surgery (sleeve) and have an under active thyroid. I take synthetic thyroid medication daily. My starting bmi was 38. I am now down 50 pounds with a bmi of 30. Weight loss has slowed but I am still losing. I eat 800-1000 calories per day and walk for an hour or more nearly every day. I work out with a trainer ( mostly strength training) a half hour twice each week. I am feeling great!

I'm 5 months post, I've lost 40 lbs so far, and I had my thyroid removed. My doctor told me the surgery would be a perfect fit. And it has worked for me too! It has helped my energy levels so much. I'm down to my old clothes size which is what I was when I was younger. Anything more now for me is sprinkles. I'm feeling fantastic! I take Natures Thyroid which has all the hormones not just T3.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
