What happens when you dont get you protein?

I feel like im SUCKING at this. Water intake is super low Protein is super duper low. Im working on getting better every day every time i read post on here just about every other post talks about protein! Lol what are some of the side effects of not getting enough?

Yes, it can be hard initially to get all the Water and Protein in.

My dietician told me to keep adding Protein powder to my liquids (when I was on liquid phase), then to yoghurt, and I still do this.

I have not had any bad effects, even though I am supposed to be on 80g Protein per day. I average 60+

All I know is that Proteins are made from chains of amino acids, and these are the building blocks for the body, and necessary for recovery and good health.

If there is not enough protein in the body, the muscles and tissues start to waste since there is not enough protein for energy and repair.

Some people suffer from hair loss, although ironically some people eat loads of protein and still go through a Hair loss phase.

Protein also quells hunger really well, and fills you up without the added sugars like in some carbs. So, after a high protein meal, you stay satisfied lot longer.

Water/fluids are very important. I suffered from a really bad Dehydration event, early post op, and it was a terrifying experience for me. Lucky I was in a clinic, and a nurse there recognised it, and gave me an electrolyte drink, and after 15 mins I was OK.

Now, over 6 months post op, I can guzzle Water, but it took me over 4 months to get to that stage.

It will get better for you, just need to force yourself to keep sipping or drinking, and add Protein Powder to your drinks/purees/meals.

You die. Lol, jk. Nothing happens as long as you get the same amount of Protein a normal person requires as an average for the long term. Protein now is better because it keeps you fuller longer and greatly helps your recovery. If you don't get all of it, which for some people is like 80-100g a day and is a really enormous amount, nothing really happens. I was self-pay and I decided to have surgery about 2 weeks before I was rolled into the OR, so I never got the whole speech about eating my weight in protein a day. I ate what I felt like eating, which in hindsight was not anywhere near the amount of protein I should have had. Now, when I want a snack, I try to opt for something that has at least some protein, but in the end I get about what the average person my age and weight is supposed to be having.

So..short version. Nothing bad happens if you don't hit that huge goal everyday, but the closer you get, the better you will feel, the faster you will recover, and, at least in theory, the more likely you will be to lose weight.

Fluid is the most important number....you must get in your Fluid. You can live a long time without Protein but not getting enough fluid will land you back in the hospital very very quickly.....For me what worked best was I first focused on getting in all my fluid, rather than trying to do both at the same time........once I was able to do that, then I started working on getting my Protein numbers up.....

Don't get me wrong protein is very very important and the quicker you're able to get the amount up to where it needs to be the better you will feel......but fluid should be the number one concern.

Do the best you can to get your Protein in, especially the first few months. It is important for keeping the muscle that's so easily lost during the quick weight loss phase and it does help with healing. I don't think anyone gets all the required protein in the first few weeks, and @@OzRoo is right, hydration is much more important in the early weeks after surgery. People don't land in the hospital for lack of protein, but do all the time for dehydration.

If you can drink fluids you can get your Protein in. Try drinking Protein that are the consistency of Water, like Syntrax nectar, or broth with unflavored protein powder.< /p>

In the short term you can go without protein easily. However the longer you go without nutrition, the lower and harder your recovery is going to be. You don't get energy until you can eat.

Protein is critical for healing and weight loss.

Side effects of not getting enough Protein (in my educated opinion):

Slow healing

Complications

Lack of energy

Muscle Loss

hair loss

Skin problems

Nail problems

Slow or no weight loss (other than muscle loss)

Do everything you can to get in your protein and fluids. Sip line it is your job! It gets easier but keep at it.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
