I'm a few days away from the pre-op, and then the surgery 10/13. I'm surprised that my feelings are changing, I was super excited, ready to go, wish it was today, and then I went shopping. All of a sudden I realized looking at items on the shelves, my freedom to select anything, is going to be gone. This may be the last grocery shopping I do that I'm free to pick anything I want. That was always out there, of course. But to actually be there in that moment. I guess you would say reality arrived today. It took me by surprise, and kept getting stronger and stronger. It's so ironic, your trapped by food, and soon to be free of it. Did you have freedom before or do you have freedom now?

Let me know what you think, I could really use some feedback.

Thank You

Michelle

I'm entering my 2nd week of the liquid pre-op diet and can TOTALLY relate to what you're feeling! Once the reality has began to set it, it's a bit scary! Hang in there. We can do this!

I am looking forward to the 'control' of a prescribed diet because I take advantage of that freedom you speak about.

food is everywhere and we must eat to live but when we rely on food for comfort or to alleviate boredom, what do we do after surgery?

It hasn't hit me yet but it will when I realize I can't just grab some chips or stop at a fast food place because its easy.

I cried and cried before surgery. I was so emotional. I had used food as a coping skill since I was a kid. Now that was changing, I was scared. But once I calmed down. I knew this was the right choice. I still struggle some days, but I am following the plan. I do have a counselor...she helps keep me in check and we are working on my other coping skills. It's good to have support through this journey we're on.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
