Decision on where I'll have the surgery has been made....

Recommended Posts

So I bounced between looking at Mexico for surgery. Then decided I'd rather stay in Canada since I was self-pay and looked all over for a place. The only surgeon I found was in Montreal which is far from home.

Lots more searching then off to my GP to talk with her about it. I'm reluctant to have it elsewhere as it's difficult to have follow-up if I go out of province, or country. My GP felt I should stay here and get it done at no cost (I just don't want the LONG wait).

So in the end I had no choice - I had to go through the Adult Bariatric Clinic here and I'm slogging through all the initial lessons before I can submit them and then get an appointment to take this further.

If it's going to take more than a year then I don't think I'll be interested in waiting. However, having the resources to help me (for free) would be so nice. Nutritionists, Psychologists, surgeons, doctors. So we shall see - need to get these lessons done and in for an appointment!

My gut tells me it's the right thing to do....

I'm sure it will work out for you! Having a choice is great so just stay the course. It seems like you have given it a great deal of thought and consideration. If you feel good about your choice, then it is a good decision. Trust your instincts!

Good luck! :)

Thank you DebSmiles - it was sure a long road to get to this point! lol But I have to trust my gut or I won't feel comfortable with any decision I make. The other roads (Mexico or cross-country) were self-pay and quick decisions; in other words, they could do the surgery in literally a month - it made me uneasy as I feel this would leave me very unprepared, and without any resources to fall back on. Onward.... :-)

I know it sounds crazy but the time is going to flyby and all of a sudden bam, it's going to be time for surgery. Take this time to do all the things that you will not be able to do after your surgery. You'll be on a liquid diet for at least one week before two weeks after then soft mushy diet after. And you're going be really tired for the first four weeks or so, your energy level might be low. So if you have the money take it and do some fun things for yourself and your family because when you have the surgery your life will have a lifestyle change. From the way you sound I know it's gonna be a good one, but it will be one. So, just enjoy this time and do some of the things that your not going to be able to do for awhile. I know you're gonna be great once you get your surgery. I'm so excited for you!

Good luck and thanks!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
