Newbie saying hello

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm JenRae and I am new to the site. I wanted a place to be able to track my thoughts and feelings as I go through my journey as well as get feedback from others who have been where I am now.

I've been to the WLS seminar and I just had my first appointment with the surgeon who said I am a good candidate for the sleeve surgery. The only concern he had was that I have acid reflux and he said that it can sometimes get worse after surgery. So I do have to have an upper GI soon. I really liked him. I had a ton of questions for him and he patiently answered them all. He and his staff both seem to be very nice.

I weigh 250 lbs and my goal healthy weight for my height is around 150. So 100 lbs to lose!

Tomorrow is my appointment with the counselor. And I have a nutrition class scheduled on September 6th. Doc said it could be as early as only 2 months before the surgery. Wow! So maybe an October 2016 surgery date?

Looking for encouragement and friends as I embark on my sleeve journey!

Thanks for reading,

Jenny

While it is true that acid reflux can get worse with WLS, you should also know that MOST of the time, it lessens it, and sometimes, cures it. Some people finally decide to get the weight loss surgery because they want to cure the acid reflux. Do you have a hiatal hernia? If you don't know, there's a good chance you have one. My mom has one and her acid reflux is severe. If she goes one day without her Nexium, she's suffering. She drank orange juice one time and choked on it for a good 20 minutes. It was a scary ordeal. Nexium and Prilosec are great for acid reflux, but they're also horrible on your bones. My mom already has bone degeneration in her spine, and she's only 54. So, she's getting this surgery in hopes that her acid reflux will get better.

A lot of people with acid reflux have a hiatal hernia. When they go in to do the gastric sleeve, if they find a hernia, they fix it. I had one and I had no idea. I barely ever had acid reflux. The only time I had it is when I ate certain spicy foods, and even then it wasn't that bad.

Welcome! I don't know much about reflux but I just wanted to say my stats are the same as yours. I had my psych eval last Thursday, I hope to have an insurance approval and surgery date soon. Best of luck to you!!

I waffle back and forth between being nervous and being really excited and ready! Last week we went on vacation, flew from Dallas and Orlando and back. The plane going was newer and the seat belts were fine, but coming back it was an older plane and I could barely buckle it. I told my husband I don't want to fly again until I lose weight.

Do you follow any blogs or watch YouTube? There are a ton of video blogs on YouTube of people who have had WLS. I am kinda obsessed with watching them, there are lots of people who have lost lots of weight and are doing great, it gives me hope!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
