For Vets who Gained after Goal, then lost it...HOW did you lose it?

Hi Vets- well, to make a long story very short, at 24 months post op i was within about 10 lbs of goal and then had tragic loss. Gained 20 lbs. now have 30 total to lose, but really would be happy to just get these 20 off.

Made it to the Y yesterday to make appt with trainer to get some sort of regimen for exercise. Called a new bariatric clinic for appt with Doc and Nut.

My question for those who gained several years out and then lost it- HOW did you re-lose? did you start over (as the 5 day pouch reset suggests) with Day 1 post op type eating? Did you go back to reincorporating shakes? Was it portion measurement, carb restriction??????

Just curious mostly. I have appt to see a new doc and nut and will also be curious to see what they tell me!

I've had to lose back some re-gain a couple of times. Here is what works for me:

1. For the first five days, eat nothing but lean meats (unprocessed -- no Jerky, bacon, sausage, deli meat), green veggies, and healthy fats. Eat as much as I want and don't worry about calorie intake each day, but weigh all portions and track intake on MyFitnessPal.

2. After five days, expand to include dairy, tree nuts, Protein Powder, Beans & legumes, and small quantities of fruit. No grains, no sweets, no starchy veggies, no liquid calories other than Protein Shakes.< /p>

3. Also after those first five days of meat and green veggies, set a daily calorie goal in MyFitnessPal of 500 calories under my maintenance calorie level. If you are not sure of your maintenance calorie level, a good starting point is your current weight (in pounds) x 10. Continue to weigh/measure my portions religiously. Eat Protein first at every meal.

4. Do vigorous exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, five days per week, but do not eat back my exercise calories. I don't even try to calculate calories burned, I just care about doing vigorous exercise like running, HIIT, etc. Walking doesn't count!

I think it is great that you are going to check back in with your bariatric team. I am sure they will help you a lot. Good luck!

I too gained some and am now back on track. I just went back to basics: admit the regain without judgement, logged food, and got serious again about exercise. After speaking with some of my friends who have always been at healthy weights I realized this is a process many individuals go through whether they had surgery or not :-)

for the past 48 hrs i have just focused on cutting out soda which has been generally easy. I work nights and go in tonight so that will be my true test! i have also tried to generally lean onto Proteins and cut most of the crap out.

so far, so good. i have an appointment in 3 weeks with the new bariatric clinic (changed insurance and old doc/clinic doesn't accept new one).

Hi, I'm a little over 4 years out from VSG. So, I reached my goal and beyond within a year of surgery. About 2 1/2 years out I started regaining and finally put the breaks on that in January. It has actually been easier than I thought to lose the weight. I need to lose 25 lbs to get back to goal and I have already lost 14. All I have done is cut out the carbs. I had let a lot of bad habits sneak back into my life -- iike diet soda, sweets, and carbs. I have cut all of that! I'm drinking more Water and trying to stick to Protein. I think this far out going to Clear liquids and all of that would be too difficult. I had hoped when I got the sleeve that I would never have to diet again. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Still, now I feel like I have a fighting chance. Also, even if I'm battling 25 lbs, I'm going from "overweight" to "normal" on the bmi chart and not "severely obese" to "obese".

Even though the weight loss battle is still a definite fight, I feel like I have so much more control. Still feel like it's the best thing I could have ever done for my health!

I'm not sure if you are asking me or not, but I'm doing great! I'd like to get down to 125 lbs and currently I'm at 130.6. Once I cut the soda and got rid of the carbs, it's amazing how well my stomach works!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
