Help!!! Its so hard to not cheat on this pre-op diet!!!! LOL I feel like I am in hell. Today is day 4... I swapped a shake for a salad with grilled chicken that was nutritionally comparable. A few more cals and carbs that my shake but not significant.

Did anyone have a pre-op diet that allowed 2 shakes and small Protein rich meal? I know its still cheating but I do feel like I am smart about it. Its not like I ate a slice of cake or pizza or anything loaded in carbs or fat.

Maybe I am just trying to justify it to myself..

Come on people!! Someone sympathize with me! LOL :P

The most difficult part for me to learn was that hunger was really an invention of my mind.

Once I realized that, things got easier for me.

So I drank my Protein Shakes and ignored the head-hunger, and eventually it went away.

In my case, hunger is mental.

I would ask the doctor if you can have that. and if not why.

I know for me information is the key. if their is a good reason why you cant chew your calories instead of drink them.

But definitly ask your doctor if there is a pre op diet that you will have a better chance of sticking to.

I understand what you are going through. I am on my second week of pre-op diet I will be banded 9/5. I feel bad sometimes and then sometimes I feel o.k. Just hang in there. My diet is 3 slimfast with all the sugar free Jello , popsicles I want. Or I can have the 2 slimfast with a small piece of chicken, fish, or shrimp., with a vegetable or salad. Try to contact your Dr. about it . I know it can be hard because I tried to talk to my Dr. about changing my slimfast to an egg or something and he kinda brushed me off. I hope your Dr. don't do you that.

i am going to meet with the surgeon on tuesday so im not even sure if hell approve me for surgery but since i found out that i am going to meet with the surgeon i have fallen off of the wagon, ive been eating really bad and have gained 2 pounds. i need to get a grip but its hard. i went 3 months without gaining anything now i feel out of control. i am aware of how this makes me feel and i want to stop because i dont need to gain weight and i know that its not healthy to overeat or eat bad right before surgery and suggestions?

Well...

Your dramatic sin is.... not a sin. Your transgression of a salad with chicken in lieu of a Protein shake is generally seen as an alternative to the monotonous choc-vanilla-whatever flavor comes next food in a can.

I feel you are way ok*. Many people cannot or will not stick to the Protein shakes pre-op. So, to shrink the liver for your surgery you go high-protein (hey; isn't chicken hi-protein?) and low-fat.

*I'm not a doctor, but I've stayed at one of those hotels they mention on tv...

banded (or is it branded?) 8/17

thj - you made me about snarf my crystal light all over my laptop with that last line... LOL

Overall my theory on this pre-op deal is this. Yes they want to shrink your liver for surgery and high protein and low fat diet is the best shot. However, I think the docs and nutrition people think that prescribing shakes and fluids is just easier than actaully having to give real deal nutrtional counseling. If we all knew exactly how to be on one of those diets , we wouldnt need this surgery right??? I think the liquid is just an easy fix for the docs.

I'll play their game til next monday, but I am gonna "cheat" a little for my sanity until saturday with a small salad a day in place of one shake. It made all the difference for me in the world today. I'll do full liquid sunday and monday before surgery.

I was just banded on the 25th and my 7day pre-op diet consisted of two shakes and then a sensible low carb/low fat dinner. In that week I only lost 4 pounds but I did stick to the diet and found that the dinner was really satisfactory. I took advantage of it being summer and grilled some chicken breast and some eggplant, zucchini, and mushrooms on a skewers. That kept me from cooking anything in fat and gave it all extra flavor. I didnt get tired of the meal after those awful shakes and it helped me feel like I wasn't depriving myself.

I have been on clear liguids, which is Water & broth. 2 Protein Shakes and a very small amount of cottage cheese. It has been hard, but a lot of is mental. I would do almost anything for a Lean Cusine dinner or a salad. And I have to do it for a week or two after being banded. But it is all worth it in the long run.

You asked if anyone had a 2 shake diet with a rich Protein meal. I did. that is what my doctor ordered...

So you have no reason to feel bad!

I went to the surgeon for my 2 wk pre-op yesterday (surgery is 9/18) and found out I had gained 5 lbs. Now I'm on an all liquid diet. I have to lose 15 lbs by 9/17. I'm one day into this and I have a horrible headache. Don't know if it's caffeine or food withdrawal. I don't know how I'm going to do this for 2 more weeks! Any advice? Can I have broth? I'm already tired of the sweet stuff as I am not a sweet eater. One more crystal light and I think I'm going to scream! Sorry to sound so negative.

I have felt your pain.

I was on a 14 day liquid pre op diet, three Optifast shakes, per day. No food. I cheated 4 times. Like you I had a small meal, I did not binge on crap. I cheated for my sanity. I would have gone postal without looking forward to my saturday steak, or my egg Breakfast. I planned these cheats to make the three shakes seem less like torture.

I lost 11 pounds on the pre op and the doc said I did very well. i confessed to the cheats, and he said "everyone cheats, the only difference is some people dont admit it".

Now I am 2 weeks post op, I have lost 8 pounds since surgery, so I am down 19 pounds in 4 weeks.

Try your best, you will be fine

Does anyone know if you should just loose some wight before surgery or if it is a specific amount in order for you to shrink the liver ? I will hopefully have surgery in oct. I have already started to diet some , mostly to try to get use to the diet change needed for surgery.

My pre-op diet was 3 Meal Replacement shakes like slimfast every day plus one meal consisting of plain chicken or fish 3oz and then some veggies and stuff. For the variety instead of that we could have Lean Cuisine. So that's what I did. I had the shakes plus a different lean cuisine every night for 2 weeks. OH...and I could have fruit so I used frozen berries in one of my shakes each day.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
