OMG the acid! Not sure how much reflux I can take...

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease), prior to my sleeve and I also had a small hiatal hernia that was repaired during my surgery. So, I have been taking Omeprazol before surgery and I still take it every evening. My problem seems to be gas or indigestion, no reflux, but just kinda bubbly in my guts. I chew a couple of Simethicone tablets and the indigestion/gas goes away. I'm fortunate that it doesn't happen every night, nor do I wake up with reflux like I did prior to surgery.

This is one of my biggest fears! I am glad to know that Nexium may be an option.

Question for both of you, @ and @justthere4theshow - did either of you have reflux before the sleeve? Or a hernia? I have occasional heartburn now, but I have a hiatal hernia that the doc is fixing at the same time as my sleeve.

I can count on 1 hand how many times I've had heart burn or acid reflex. I have not had surgery yet but I am wondering if everyone get this after surgery?

Check with your doctor.

This happened to me

I was told to start taking one tablet three times a day instead of two.

Also to use Gaviscon as well .

The tablets coat your stomach and the Gaviscon sits on top of your stomach contents . Soothing when you regurgitate.

For me when this occured... it was the PPI that was causing my reflux!! It was my body's way of rejecting it.

I stopped it completely and after 2 days it was completely gone never to return.. thankfully!

@ How are you weaning off the PPI? I will be starting that process too.

At first, I took it every 1.5 days, as at 2 days first time I had very mild bit of reflux. Did that for nearly a week.

Then I took it every 2 days, and I was fine.

Now I am trialling every 3 days. So far I am OK. No reflux.

If all OK, I will then take it every 4th day, then 5th etc, then 6th, then a week later.

I was advised by a member on another forum to do it very slowly, so I am copying her method and watching for any reactions.

I will still refill my script and keep it for any emergencies.

Good luck!

@

Thanks! That is actually pretty much how my GI doctor suggested to taper. Let me know how it goes for you :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
