Bored with Breakfast! Any dieticians out there?

Recommended Posts

I am in week nine post surgery and really sick of eating eggs, yogurt, and Protein shakes. I still enjoy the fruit. I am craving carbs for the first time and broke down and bought the low carb Protein Bars on this website. Feeling very guilty about it. My dietician said to avoid rice, Pasta, bread, potatoes, and starchy foods altogether for the next six months when my weight loss will most significant. Is this one person's opinion? Can I eat a Protein Bar or oatmeal occassionally if it's in moderation?

I am not a dietician. My NP gave me the same advice as yours. I chose to listen to my NP and I successfully lost all my weight in 9 months and have been maintaining that 110+ lb weight loss for three years.

You are a grown woman. You can choose to eat anything you want. Why in the world would you feel guilty about making your own choices about your nutrition? Only you can decide what you stick in your face. There are tons of great low carb options out there, but if you choose to eat Protein bars or oatmeal, good on ya'! I dislike oatmeal but I do like an occasional protein bars. I didn't eat them while I was losing, but if you want to, why not?

Best success to you.

I am at week 9 after gastric sleeve and the Protein bars are not an issue with the exception that I really find none of them palatable. I have eaten one in a pinch but prefer real food to the bars.

I too am tired of eggs so I have been eating chicken, fish, or beef and some refried Beans or veggies. I am not much of a Breakfast food fan.

Also I have never been much of a fish fan but I have been trying to incorporate into my diet twice a week.

Stacyrg2,

I will gladly explain my response to Bufflehead. You think I am being ridiculous? She was rude to me... She didn't really give much thought to responding to my post that clearly asked the question... If there were any dieticians out there? She made accusations that I was eating to be entertained AND that I trusted strangers more than my dietician. I don't have a problem with eating something other than a traditional breakfast but because there are three meals and Protein requirements in each of them, I need some variety. By the way, I don't like tuna or salmon. I really just want a dietician to tell me that oatmeal and Protein bars sold on this website might be an option for someone at my stage, post surgery. I guess I'll email my dietician and hear from her in a few days. Unfortunately, I live Baton Rouge, LA where flood waters surround us. I can't even leave my house and thought that interacting with others would be helpful. Apparently not... My mother always said if you don't have something nice to say...say nothing at all! Maybe the best response would have been to ignore her and you for that matter. But? Not feeling it today. Too many other things weighing on my heart and mind.

She wasn't rude to you. She took the time to give you a caring, well thought out response. It wasn't the answer you wanted to hear and that's ok. She did nothing wrong.

Clearly you have a lot going on right now in your life and perhaps you will read this thread later with a different outlook. I certainly hope so.

I have many friends in LA (and many who were devastated by the floods in WVA) and my heart breaks for you. I wish you well. I can't imagine going through such devastation with a clear head, especially after such an emotional surgery. You are in my thoughts.

I am so sorry you are experiencing the flooding. Please stay safe.

To go back to oatmeal --- I AM NOT A DIETICIAN, but based on what my NUT has told me and my own research, I don't include good, whole grains (like oatmeal) in the same category as starches (white rice, bread, Pasta, corn, etc.). There is a place for some carbs (in moderation) in a healthy diet. Just be aware of why and how much you are eating them.

You are still early out so the priority should be (based on my own knowledge and experience), Protein and fluids. If you choose to have oatmeal or a Protein bar or your shoe, just make sure you track it and that you get in your protein.

:D This right here is classic. New person on the board asks a question. Seems as though she's not real happy with her dietician's advice:

I am in week nine post surgery and really sick of eating eggs, yogurt, and Protein shakes. I still enjoy the fruit. I am craving carbs for the first time and broke down and bought the low carb Protein Bars on this website. Feeling very guilty about it. My dietician said to avoid rice, Pasta, bread, potatoes, and starchy foods altogether for the next six months when my weight loss will most significant. Is this one person's opinion? Can I eat a Protein Bar or oatmeal occassionally if it's in moderation?

Successful vet comes in, gives good advice INCLUDING the suggestion of heeding dietician's advice for best results and wishes her well.:

If your dietitian says to avoid starchy foods, then avoid starchy foods. Your dietitian isn't just "one person" that you should decide to disregard, your dietitian is a crucial member of the team you should be trusting to lead you to weight loss and health. Why would you throw away your dietitian's advice in order to follow the advice of random internet strangers?

Also, IMO being "bored" with food shouldn't be much of a consideration right now. You should be eating for health and weight loss, not entertainment. It is okay to not be entertained by your food. If you need to switch it up, are there high-protein, low carb options you can look at, like tuna or salmon salad, chicken breast with green veggies, turkey sausage or bacon? Cottage cheese? Ricotta bake? It might help to go away from traditional "breakfast" type foods if you want more options.

Good luck!

New member shows obvious irritation at said vet, calls her judgemental, says she only wants to hear from dietician, just not HER dietician. She then claims to be non trusting of strangers (yet she is asking a board of strangers) and also states she is kind and considerate to them anyways (when clearly her definition of kind and considerate is questionable).

Kids, you can't make this stuff up! :D:):D

Bufflehead, are you a dietician? You seem awfully judgmental regarding my post. I was inquiring on the safety of Protein bars being sold on this legitimate Bariatric website AND I asked if there were any dieticians in my headline if you had noticed. I TRUST my surgeon, the dietician, and the PA who is mostly who I see. I don't trust strangers but I am kind and considerate to them. You apparently didn't fully read my post because you are suggesting that I eat salmon and tuna for Breakfast and made the assumption that I eat for entertainment. I don't eat for entertainment, I eat to survive. What in the world is wrong with wanting to do something new with a breakfast that is ho-hum and repetitive?

Just another day. *Yawn*

Unless you are allergic to fish, I suggest people learn to like fish, there are all different kinds. If you don't like fish fish, swai has a very mild taste. Why fish? It is low in calories, packed with Protein and super easy to digest.

Enjoying seafood will make your weight loss so much easier.

I love seafood but I don't like tuna or salmon. Never eat them but I have crab, shrimp, lobster, cod and swai all the time.

@@AmiLou You CAN eat anything you want, I think you're looking for if you SHOULD or not. There seems to be a rough general consensus in the WLS community (not 100%, so all you Protein bar eaters hush ;-) ) that we should do our best once on 'real' food to get our dietary needs from 'real' food vs bars/shakes/etc. That said, I keep a Protein Bar in my purse for times when I'm away from my house longer than planned and I start to get that 'crazed' feeling. My dietitian would prefer that I not place myself in such situations and not ever eat a bite of a Protein bar, but my life is mine, so... :-) I also supplement with 30g of protein from powder daily, but it's explicitly allowed in my plan.

I'm not going to speculate about your relationship with your dietitian, but I'm not super-impressed with mine and often talk with my surgeon or the other RD in the practice vs taking her at her word about EVERYthing. I'm in the practice I'm in because of the surgeon I wanted to do my sleeve, not because his ancillary staff is my dream team. So I back-check her with other trusted sources.

No one here, at least none of the wise vets (and I'm not a vet, I'm an 8-week newbie), is going to give you 'permission' to do anything, and there's no way for you to tell who is an RD and who isn't, so any advice you get here from someone who labels themselves a professional in the field should be suspect at the least.

Don't get mad and leave...I was absolutely appalled at some of the responses I saw back when I was just reading, months before I saddled up and joined the site. I think you have to be around for a while and see some of the denial, dangerous behavior and downright nastiness that the vets get for their opinions. Could they be a little gentler sometimes, sure, but you're the 8,271st person they've had this exact same conversation with and they're understandably a little less enchanted with it each time. And once you see the amount of time some of them are willing to invest, talking to strangers on the internet who are frightened, in pain, lost...you'll gain a great deal of respect for what they're willing to share. I certainly have.

Best of luck to you, and I hope you stick around.

The other day I had crab legs for breakfasst. Yum. I rarely eat "breakfast" for breakfasst, but I often eat "breakfast" for dinner!

I wish I could do this...my brain insists that Breakfast be something conventionally 'breakfast' by American standards. Right now I'm just drinking Protein in my coffee because my sleeve hates eggs at the present time, Cereal is out and oatmeal is higher carb than I want to eat right now. My old 'breakfast anytime' standard was french toast. I wonder how I ended up 260 lbs? :-)

Yeah, get over that. I often make quiche, omelettes, BLTs for dinnner. Breakfast generally consists of leftovers like taco meeat and Beans, cheeese and apples, leftover steak or chicken with Sriracha mayo and avocado... Salmon? Heck yeah! tuna? Who eats that crap on purpose?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
