Day After Surgery: Am I Taking In Enough?

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I was sleeved yesterday. Doing well, I think. Uncomfortable, but I think it's mostly gas. I am having trouble differentiating between the gas and the full sensations I am getting from my newly sleeved tummy.

Anyway, so far this morning, I have been able to slowly sip down about 8-10 oz. Bariatric Advantage shake over about three hours, and I have also sipped about 8 oz. of Water so far throughout the course of the morning.

Does this sound about normal for just starting out? I am assuming I will need to work up to the full daily Fluid and Protein intake, but I just want to make sure I'm not going too slowly.

Thanks for any feedback!

I was only allowed Clear Liquids right after surgery. You do have to drink them very slowly and take your time. 16 ounces of liquid is a great amount for a morning the day after surgery.

Thanks to you both! Yeah, the practice I went through allows the Protein shakes right away. Definitely thicker and a bit more challenging.

Sipping, sipping away! Thanks again!

@@kharenzhee Sounds like you're doing great!

My practice does Protein Shakes and Water day of the procedure as well, and I am thankful for that after hearing how dry everyone's mouth gets if they're not allowed liquids post op.

I have RNY on Thursday, 5 days away, can't believe it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
