Im so confused!! I was going to get the sleeve, but im very concerned about acid reflux, and being on the meds. I have had gerd for years, and have been on med for all of that time. Just read an article how peopme are getting kidney disease from acid reflux meds. I know they put u on these, after the sleeve. I dont have a tremendous amout of weight to lose, about 75 ibs or so. Any thought on this? Do they even do bypass id you have less weight to lose? I will be seeing the surgeon the end of the month.

I know my surgeon has done gastric bypass for people who have about 75 pounds to lose. I think what it comes down to is your BMI?

I was in the same boat as you, was really uncertain which surgery to have, and I found lots of info on here if I searched for things like "RNY or sleeve" "bypass vs. sleeve" "VSG or RNY" , etc.

Also found "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" to be a good book as far as going through all the surgeries, don't let the title sway you.

Honestly I think its up to you. I chose gastric bypass because I had so much weight to lose and because I already suffered from GERD(been on pills for years) getting the sleeve seemed not right for me. With that being said my surgeon is optimistic that in a month or so I wont need my GERD pills at all.

Now on the flip side I met a lady at my surgeons office who was about where I am, but she was having the sleeve. Her choice. You're surgeon can recommend, but ultimately its your choice(with insurance approval and all)

Dont quote me on this but I would assume overtime your GERD symptoms would improve greatly. And you have to think that maybe some things that are your triggers prior to surgery may be something you may never eat again.

Thank u. Its funny some people with gerd improve with the sleeve. Some have worse gerd than before the sleeve. So confusing

I just had a thought. I had to do a barium swallow test and they actually found very little acid in my stomach. I was shocked, because here I was taking pills every day. So far after surgery I haven't had one pill. I have no reflux or symptoms. It could also be the fact that Im not eating real foods yet. But the whole time I thought my GERD was this horrible thing and it really wasn't.

I dont know if you'll be required to do a swallow test, but it will tell you something about your GERD and then you could discuss it with your Dr and decide on the best option for you.

I decided to have the sleeve. I did have to take protonix for the first two months after surgery. But after the third month I didn't need them anymore. My body just needed time to adjust to a major change.

I had the bypass, mostly because of the amount of weight I need to lose. And because I was on such a high dose of Omeprazole consistently the surgeon thought it better as well.

I think that is between you and your doctor...if you have ins coverage. I did not have ins...so I chose the sleeve because I wanted my body to stay as natural as possible...plus I did not want to take all those Vitamins the rest of my life. I have known others who chose the bypass or the lap band...we all have basically experienced the same things post op. It boils down to every body is different and I believe that ultimately the choice is up to you and what you choose to live with the rest of your life...because all WLS's are just that...for life.

@gina171@shelbys mom. I'm in the same boat. Tremendous gerd for years. I was told by three separate surgeons that sleeve would make gerd worse. Rny would eliminate it. So. Second stage of band removal will be rny. Good luck with hour choice

I am a sleever. I did a lot of research before I committed. I was so disappointed in myself for not being able to keep weight off on my own. So this choice was crucial. I wanted as little change to my anatomy as possible. I had that with the sleeve. I had horrible GERD before my sleeve. I took daily meds for it. I take nothing now and I have no issues unless I eat something that is very acidic. Lots of tomatoes or citrus juice. I am glad I chose the sleeve.

Just an FYI for those who think bypass keeps the need for reflux meds away- my doctor has me on them as part of my daily meds. Forever. I had horrid reflux before, none now really, and no evidence of Barrett's esophagus BUT it is part of his protocol.

I hate to hear that, but thanks. I meet my surgeon on 8/31. I will post what he says, even though I gotta think it will be the same.

Have they ordered an endoscopy for you? If not they should. I had the same issue and come to find out I have Barrett's Esophagus and an hietal hernia. That means I am

Not eligible for sleeve any longer and have to have the Ren y. I really encourage you to get an endoscopy as if they open you up and you have ulcers, hernia Eric they will not complete your surgery!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
