PreOp Diet Hunger Help

Recommended Posts

Hi I am scheduled to have my gastric bypass on Monday December 5th. I have to say this has been very difficult for me. I have made some very bad choices in week one, but in week two I have been perfect thus far. I have been drinking my Protein Shakes and my Water. Is there a possibility they would cancel my surgery because I cheated? Plus how would they really know? Please someone answer me.

Hi There,

So I was hoping anyone might have some tips about surviving the pre-op diet. I know surgeons have different recommendations, but mine is had me do 1 week of zero carbs, which I just finished, and now clear sugar-free liquids only for 4 days. I struggled with no carbs in the beginning, but now I'm wishing I had the Protein back, haha. Emotionally, I am handling the restrictions a bit better, but now that I've shifted to almost no calories, I'm feeling a lot of physical symptoms. My stomach is aching with hunger, and I am also dealing with headaches and low energy. Is anyone else going through similar things? Any advice from people who've made it through? My surgeon is being really rigid because they still want me to lose 7lbs in the next few days before surgery, so I really can't even think of cheating :( Has anyone had success distracting themselves from the diet? I'm just trying not to think about the next four days because it's too overwhelming to imagine not eating at all :/ Any advice is totally welcome. Thanks!

My surgery was Oct 27th and I had to do 2 weeks of the liquid diet which consist of five high Protein shakes in a day (premier was the brand I used) low sodium chicken broth and water.... Yes I went through 70 high Protein Shakes in 2 weeks it was hard but I lost 21lbs with in 2 weeks

You'll be fine because I wasn't faithful to my 2 week pre-op (I cheated once and felt very guilty about it) I had my surgery Oct 27th just stick to whatever pre-op diet and workout you'll be fine BUT if the fatty liver haven't reduce then YES they can reschedule and you will have to be on the liquid diet longer

I am with you. I am also on a low carb liver shrinking diet but only for 6 days, then Clear Liquids on day before surgery. I know that I should not complain. I am having a tough time though with the tiny meals. The hardest part has been the headaches from lack of caffeine but I think I'm over the hump on that one. Best of luck to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
