have you tried different temperatures? early out I found slightly warm broth went down the easiest. only 9 oz a day of fluids is dangerously low and will likely land you back in the hospital with dehydration. so it is critical to keep sipping. if it is truly too painful to swallow, call your surgical team.

I'm doing room temperature liquids since I noticed a difference when I drank cold liquids. When I was discharged I left drinking 8 ounces a day so it has been increasing slowly. I've tried eating Jello and that ask caused pain. My next attempt will be either Soup or cream of wheat. I have a post op check up tomorrow so I will address the issue with the dr again. Prior to leaving the hospital the dr was aware and said the pain might remain for a while until my stomach starts to expand.

I would not suggest cream of wheat if you aren't tolerating liquids. Try broth or add flavors to your Water (non caloric), Vitamin Water zero, sugar free popsicles.

oddly room temp liquids were the hardest for me to get down - especially plain room temp Water. warm was easiest but if not warm, then cold. and i would agree with Kristen - if you are having trouble with liquids, cream of wheat probably not a good idea yet. I didn't even try yogurt until over a week out and and i was easily getting in liquids by then and the first time i did the yogurt, it was rough - only did an ounce and it felt very heavy. so basically my advice would be don't progress to anything thick until you can easily get in liquids

I'm a week out and just finally have been able to get Water in like I'm supposed to and I even finished a whole Protein shake today, which I consider a victory. The past six days I was only doing about 10oz of Water and I couldn't even stomach an ounce of Premier Protein. Green tea helped and so did clear broth. I know it couldn't go down bc my stomach was swollen, I feel significantly less swollen today since my surgery. You're definitely okay, just a little swollen right now. I wouldn't worry to much and don't push yourself too hard.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
