Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. I've been thinking about getting the Lap-Band ever since I heard of it a few months ago. I'm borderline on medically qualifying with a BMI of 35.2 and no major weight-related health problems ... yet. Even though I 'only' need to lose 70-90 pounds, I've been trying to lose weight for pretty much my whole life. And when I look at my sisters, my mother and my aunts and I see them just gain weight as they get older, I know its not coming off. I have to do something DIFFERENT and PERMANENT.

So, I've decided to do it. But the problem is that I already know my insurance won't cover it. I am self-employed with individual health insurance that specifically states it does not cover obesity surgery. Its pretty much impossible to get individual health insurance that does cover it. I should still be able to get a tax break for it, but that still doesn't exactly make it free.

So, given that I'll be paying for it, should I get it done in Houston or go to Mexico? Medical care in the US is unquestionably the best in the world. Is it risky to get it done in Mexico? We're talking about my health here. But if I can find a doctor/facility that's first rate in Mexico for thousands of dollars less, maybe I should consider it. I need more info to make a decision. Comments?

Sounds like you have lots of research to do. Ultimately, you'll be the one to make the final decision. Please check out the old threads. There iare tons of info. about either way. Just get your after-care lined up BEFORE you're banded, no matter where you have it done. Best of luck to you!

Hi!

I had it done by a wonderful doc here in Denton, TX. But if you are going to self pay (as I did), you may want to try to get a medical loan from Capital One. I didn't think I would qualify (based on credit), but I qualified for $15000. Go to their website and check out the cosmetic loan link.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
