Don't be surprised if you wake up in pain, I think it's more common than what is proclaimed. But just breathe, relax, ask your surgeon any questions that pop into your head, and then after, get as much sleep as you can.

Good luck!

Get up and walk after surgery as soon as you can. When you are done walking, don't get back in bed. Instead, sit in a chair or on the loveseat in your room. If there is a rocking chair or glider in your room, use that and rock/glide as much as you can. The more you can move and stay upright the better you will feel (plus getting in and out of bed is a b***h).

ETA don't try to be a hero, keep taking your pain meds as long as you need them.

Walk Walk Walk.....and like @@Bufflehead said, stay out of the bed as much as possible! For me when I first woke up I was in a lot of pain...(or at least I thought I was)....but I really think it was just the anesthesia wearing off and me not being able to cope......there was a little mishap with the the hospital staff not having my PCA ready when I was moved to my room but once they finally got me all hooked up it was much much better......I pushed my little button every time I felt the least bit of pain and I was comfortable for the rest of my stay........so much so that my surgeon saw me walking the halls and told me he thought I was over doing it and to get back in my room...LOL

Also, focus on the long term....the discomfort from surgery will pass quickly, as well as all the food and eating phases.....the rest will be a life time of the new and healthy you!

Good luck to you!!!

Thanks! I'm am exercising but only walking.....I'm getting in my 10,000 steps a day....sometimes a little more. I'm also sticking to low carb foods. Limiting high carb foods seems to work best for me......I'm getting all my Protein from real foods and also drinking plenty of fluids.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
