I am 4 days out from surgery. I had my drain removed today. The doctor wants me to have at least 1-3 Protein shakes a day. I had problems getting them down pre op and experimented with different flavors and brands. I just tried to get one swallow in and I gagged and heaved and vomited so violently I popped a stitch in my wound. I have this reaction every time. My family is telling me go to yogurt and egg whites since my doctor told me to do that next Friday. I am afraid it is too soon. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm tired of vomiting.

contact your surgeon's office. If I were you, I'd want to make sure there's nothing wrong. I was eating pureed foods before I left the hospital, so yogurt would have been fine for me, but I don't want to override what your surgeon tells you. Plus he/she should know about the vomiting.

If you are gagging on something as thin as a shake, I'm not sure you can go to yogurt or egg whites.

Why are you gagging on the shakes? Do you know? It's really important to get your Protein in right now, and you won't possibly be able to do with with yogurt and egg whites alone. The shakes are concentrated in Protein. It helps with not only hair loss and bad growing nails, but also with weight loss.

Call your doctor and talk to your NUT for sure.

I had trouble getting all my Protein in post RNY (Apr-13). I'd sip enough to wet my tongue, very, very slow. I never gagged or vomited but it was difficult. I still drink one Protein shake a day at Breakfast with coffee and milk. Keep us posted.

I saw my Dr and my Nut today. They both said I have to get one in or I would be in the hospital with a pic line. I dont know what it is with the shakes. I couldn't hardly do one a day pre op so I ate one small meal a day so I wouldn't feel bad ( I work outside in GA heat). I think my NUT and Dr. Think I'm just being picky but I swear I'm not. I'm so upset about this. Water, Jello, sugar free pops are all fine.

They said vomiting is due to dehydration and it will go away one I can hold 3 bottles of Water a day. Even my chewable tart Vitamins are fine.

Have you tried the Protein waters? They're a bit more expensive but definitely worth it if you can't get the shakes down right now. You may consider the different types of Protein Shakes too. Some are whey, some are egg white, etc. I'd go to a Vitamin shoppe or GNC in your area and see if they have different Protein shake samples you can try. It's REALLY important to get your protein in. For healing if nothing else.

Thank you! I started with scrambled eggs. I've also had chicken with Frank's buffalo sauce. I just had some ham today for dinner. I've had ground turkey, and made egg salad too.

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury also makes a chicken flavored Protein powder. Mix a scoop with 8oz of Water and it tastes like chicken broth but with much more Protein. Sometimes it's easier to get something warm down that actually resembles food! I can tolerate the chocolate Protein shakes they are more like Desserts than food to me.

After much experimenting on Protein shakes, which I don't like making...I looked for drinks instead of shakes.< /p>

I now drink this three times a day and I'm happy with it...

Cold coffee, Creamer or milk of your choice, some sweetener and vanilla Protein. shake real hard, and voila, an iced vanilla coffee (decaf). You don't have to make a huge cup, just enough to make a nice cup of cold (coffee)!!! Yum! :D

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
