Hello, I am heading into my 6th week of gastric Bypass surgery. I deal with constant nausea from the time I wake up until bed time. Does anyone else deal or have experience with this? I'd love to hear from you. This really sucks.

is it worse when you eat? If so, it might be a stricture. You're in the right time frame for that. But I would call my surgeon's office either way.

Thx for responding. It's not worse when I eat. It never goes away. I've been checked for a stricture. I don't have one.

Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present.

I'm on week 5 from gastric sleeve and I'm nauseous all the time. Eating is fine but I'm having trouble getting my liquids is impossible because the more I drink the worse I feel. My doctor put me on medicine for acid reflux. He also told me that the more dehydrated I get, the worse the nausea will be. I have been dealing with it for the past 2 weeks and it's horrible!

I am 3 months out and still get nauseous daily but not all day and not as bad as before. I am ver careful with my diet.

I am starting to read some things under the bypass forum and it kinda freaks me out. I was hoping for the sleeve but the presence of pre barrett's syndrome may force me to have the bypass. I know the surgery is still being done but I almost feel like I am now not able to choose. I can't be constantly nauseous as I am one of our top sales ppl. I can't miss a lot of work just trying to get healthier!

I don't know how common nausea is. I was never nauseated except for a few days before they discovered I had a stricture - and that was only after I ate.

Sounds terrible, I'm so sorry. I would get back in front of your surgeon.

This is true. I recently discovered that my gastric sleeve surgery saved my life. I am very lucky to say they detected h pylori infection during my surgery. I have been living with this for years and had not known. Luckily, no cancer was detected and am taking the necessary treatment the doctors have provided through medications to treat this. I suffored with extreme nausea and heartburn after surgery and now know it had nothing to do with my surgery. Hopefully this helps others in some way. Best wishes to all.

I am week 4 still need nausea med occasionally. My Dr told me if you suffer from allergies and that yucky drip down the back of your throat that can be enough to make you nauseated especially after you wake up.

Zofran is my BFF! And I keep a tissue with a drop of peppermint essential oil on it handy...I find that "waving" it around helps the nausea pass more quickly and happen less frequently...hope you're doing better soon!

My surgeon does an endoscopy about 1 month pre-op to check for H pylori, etc. He says he doesn't want any "surprises" during surgery. Guess I appreciate him even more now.

I am an only child so I tend to have first born philosophy too. They did and endoscopy on the 8th and confirmed I DON'T have pre barrett's syndrome so I should be able to have the sleeve! Very thankful! Hoping for a mid to late November surgery.

I too wanted the sleeve but acid issues made bypass the better option. I cried lol. Today is 5 weeks out (I do not want to be attacked for my honest reply here by others) I have lost over 30lbs and had only constipation issues. My program was different then most I guess but in the hospital the morning after@ 7am they gave me a thin shake if you hold it down fine you move to pureed foods and stay on them. I was off puree by week 2 and I can & have eaten stuff that people here would be in shock to read. Tiny amounts chewed until they are apple sauce consistency (my teeth are doing the pureeing) and I have only barfed once but I did it to my self hoping that dumping would cause the runs (total frustration with the constant constipation that was also an issue before surgery) anyway 1/4 cup of that ice cream was fine but 1/3 cup was hot sweaty puke feel better 5 min later. I am not suggesting anyone eat ice cream or do anything other then what their Dr says. I just want you to know I was scared 1st that I was going to die on the table (my first major surgery ever) and 2nd that I would regret it & feel sick all of the time & never eat anything I liked again! I lost 110lbs on my own 1st in 6 months & had the surgery 3 months later. I have a hard time getting in all the Water but they have an app for that so now it's easier phone dings drink. Had an issue taking meds on time they have an app for that too!

And no more nexium, no reflux, no acid.

And finally got the constipation issue worked out with JUICE! So lots of stuff are guidelines and you will figure out how to make it all work for you!
