How long did you continue with protein supplements?

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious how far out post op that people still use a Protein supplement to get in enough protein...I'm at 4 months out and haven't been able to reach goal yet without supplementing....The reason I'm asking is I'm planning on going to costco which is 3 hrs away from home and trying to determine how many cases of Premiere Protein Shakes I should buy

I'm ten months out as of yesterday and I still have a shake daily. Some days, two (on days when I just can't force myself to eat because it's so unappetizing). My weight loss is still going strong and my blood work is great. :)

There are other choices to supplement your Protein, you know. Protein Bars, like Quest, are 20-22 g of Protein per bar and are a nice snack alternative. You can also buy unflavored Protein powder -online as well- and add to whatever you are eating or drinking and even bake with it.

Some people I know use non fat powdered milk as an additive to things to increase the protein count to meet your requirements.

Explore other options before committing to more RTD shakes.

Heck! Quest even has some pretty good chips that are loaded -21 grams!- with protein! Awesome for dipping in salsa or a sour cream dip!

Protein Bars don't sit well with me yet...I keep trying occasionally and it is getting better so hopefully! Thanks for the advice ... I haven't tried adding unflavored Protein to foods yet. I guess I feel the amount you have to add is going to change the taste of my food...lol

Not if its unflavored! Lol. But- what I have been known to do is add one scoop of unflavored to my regular shake- thereby doubling the Protein value.

Try those chips is you can. GNC carries single serve bags. I go with the sea salt ones and use with salsa. Guilt free indulgences!

I'm 13 months out. If I only needed the standard 60 g of Protein a day, I could have dropped the shakes by now. But I have to shoot for 100 g a day or else my blood Protein levels tank. I can't get that high and still keep my calorie intake reasonable without a shake, so I'll probably be drinking one every day for the rest of my life. Fortunately, there are a few that I like.

I'm over 2.5 years and still use Protein Powder (in a shake, Mug Cake, poured in my oatmeal, etc) or bar most days.

I like the taste of the Inspire Protein powders but they just foam up too much for my liking...so I find the chocolate premade Premier Protein shakes the most pleasant for everyday use. I'm thinking the mug cakes sound good!

I'm a year post-op and still drink 1 Premier Protein drink everyday. I enjoy them actually and like that it helps me get to over 100g Protein per day.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
