Six Month Stall, anyone?

Recommended Posts

I looked in the threads to see if I could find anything, and nothing. I am just past 6 months post op and I am not sure what is going on. The last time I was losing steadily and consistently was a month ago, just about. Two lbs per week seemed very good to me, then I hit onderland and something happened: my weight has been fluctuating up, but not down. I gained 4 lbs from one day to the next; I was floored, especially because I haven't changed my calorie intake, or started anything anything I should not, so I blamed it on Water weight, which is fine. I have not lost consistently in a month. Now, I am about 4 lbs "behind" of where I should be at. I have started exercising and that is not helping. Anyone else experience something similar at 6 months?

Before anyone asks, no, I am not eating more or added any foods that I am not supposed to eat; Protein is ~80 grams per day, or more. I am on light exercise because I just started (~30 min on treadmill and some weight training). My fear is the same as others, that I will be stuck and won't lose anymore weight; it is discouraging. My NUT said I was on the right track with calories and all. Discouraging and frustrating at best :(

I stalled at around 5 1/2 months and have been stalled for a good 2 months. I got my period back and it realy never has stopped and at the same time, I have completely stalled. It was SOOOOOO frustrating. FINALLY last week the scale went down to a new number for me postop! I tried EVERYTHING during my stall. i increased exercise, I decreased exercise, I upped my Protein, I upped my Water intake and NOTHING changed it. I don't know- I've stopped bleeding finally and now I am losing again- so i will take it :)

Thanks for sharing your experience, and I couldn't agree more, it is so frustrating. I will just have to wait. I just cannot accept I went through all this pain and crazy roller coasters to stay where I am at now. I believe that.

Six months is a common time to stall. I did for about 7 agonizing weeks and also wondered if that was it for the weight loss. Not even close!

Obviously what you're doing isn't working. Your body has become complacent. Change things up. I think at 6 months it's a good time to increase your calories and Protein, especially if you're increasing activity. If you're at 1000 calories, increase to 1100. Eat foods you don't normally eat. Add a few healthy grains sparingly.

Also, know your macros. This whole thing is basically one big science experiment, and if you don't know where you stand on calories, carbs, Protein, etc, you can't possibly know how to approach changing things up enough to shake things up so your body responds accordingly.

You've increased your activity. Throw everything you've known or not known about dieting out the window and increase calories. We as WLS patients respond differently than normal people. Our bodies fight to keep fat because we are in a constant caloric deficit. Trick it into thinking you're not starving ;)

Good luck!

Ohhh I hit the big stall about 4-6weeks ago.. I posted a few weeks back that i thought I was over it, but noooooo.....I was stuck between 327-329 for weeks.. it was not until this last friday i hit 324 then this morning 323...so fingers crossed I hope this stall is over...but I have enjoyed dropping another half pants size so stall are not that bad, other things are happening within our bodies during this stall period..

I had to go by new undies for me during this stall and I did not have to go to big and tall (WHOOT)

I was able to walk into the jockey store and get stuff off the rack in XL.. before I had to go to casual male big and tall...

no more spending $$$ for 2 pair of undies, now i get them for cheap at the outlet..

We need to put together a pamphlet for folks starting this journey so they will know, not only will your health improve (re-gained my KING status with the wife in the bedroom tap-out! WHOOOT), but also I am saving money on groceries and in clothing cost.

Get some Iron in your diet.

This kind of iron:

You'll increase your metabolism and profit hugely. Don't be patient with stalls......actively do things that you know will bust you through them. Track your calorie intake, track your sodium intake, stay hydrated, start a weight training program and get some cardio in. Stay strict with your programs eating guidelines and take comfort in knowing you will win out and wrestle that stall to the ground.

I've been in a stall for a while now too. It's my own undoing though. I have been eating like crap, drinking wine like it's going out of style...so it's my fault. I have been okay at my current weight because I'm getting compliments, I'm comfortable in clothes now, and even enjoy shopping, BUT I don't want to be done losing weight. This morning I woke up, ate a healthy Breakfast, went to the gym, and started a squat challenge with a friend of mine. I wish you the best getting through your stall and think what Dub said is great advice. Lift weights if you are able.

I stalled at about 4.5 months for 6 weeks. Then I lost 6 lbs in a few short days and am stalled again for 3 weeks. My scale shows a lb loss this morning but I'm not trusting that evil contraption quite yet!

Up until the 4.5 month mark I hadn't really stalled before so my first stall lasted 6 long weeks.

I added weights to my routine (5 lb hand weights while cranking up the resistance on the elliptical) and that was when my stall broke. Don't know if it was coincidence or not.

Hang in there. Don't let it get you off track.

You are hilarious! Good job in the bedroom! LOL. and on buying cheaper undies! :D

Definitely, a guide will be most helpful for us. We do need a guide on what and when to expect it.

Best of luck on your journey.

I am about 4 and 1/2 months and have been stalled for about 2 weeks now. I've tried not to give it much thought. I workout 6x a week cardio and weight training . I eat the required Protein and within the calories. So I know I'm not doing anything "wrong".

I am very thankful for forums like this because instead of being worried, I get to read amazing advice from people who've been there and lost even more after the stall ended. Can't wait to bust through this stall and get back to dropping!

I do track all my macros on a daily basis. I do understand stalls, but I will not embrace them without doing anything about it; I am not complacent, I make things happen, and while I would patiently wait for it to be over doesn't mean I won't do anything about it.

Do you have any suggestions on how to start using this Iron? I mean, a circuit of what exercises/machines to use? I am new at weight lifting but I am very interested and on my intern salary I cannot afford a personal trainer! Ha ha...... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On the other hand, the scale did move 2 pounds since yesterday, so that gives me some encouragement to continue what I am doing :D

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
