The things no one tells you about post op life...

Recommended Posts

So I'm a year out from my surgery, and last night I was thinking about the things no one told me I would experience post op.

Here's my list:

  • Sensitive tummy! I used to have a cast Iron stomach preop. I could eat ANYTHING and not get sick. I'm talking about food left out for a day or two, weird combinations of food, anything. NOW - my stomach is very sensitive and temperamental. I can eat something one day and be fine, and eat it the next day and it will send me straight to the bathroom.
  • Tummy issues 2 - Before surgery, I used to be able to "hold" my poo (sorry if TMI) if I was in an inconvenient place (like work or the mall) until I got home. Not anymore. When I gotta go, I gotta go! And I cramp when I have to go.
  • Drinking Water is a CHORE. I didn't realize how much of a chore drinking water would be - especially with the "no eating and drinking at the same time" rule. Presurgery I could drink 64 oz of water a day easily. Now, not so much.
  • Deep down I thought being "skinny" would fix a majority of my issues. NOPE!
  • My butt hurts constantly from sitting on things! I guess since some of the padding is gone, LOL.
  • My refrigerator is a constant churn of leftovers. I am having trouble making peace with throwing away leftovers but I have to constantly.
  • I don't get nervous about having physicals at the doctor anymore.
  • If I eat the wrong thing late at night (there's one Protein Bar in particular) it gives me indigestion really bad.

What are some of the things that no one told you that you're experiencing post op?

The whole sore back side thing, I had heard other people say it would happen but oh my gosh, my tailbone kills me most of the time!!

I actually have the exact opposite problem. I barely get any urge to go, if I don't make a conscious effort to go at least once a day I get very backed up.

Spicy food. I could eat medium salsa before surgery, now I can't even eat mild salsa. Sad.

Sore backside- I actually have a tailbone now. And tummy issue #2, and heartburn. Used to never get heartburn

I'm still fat but my butt hurts all the time. I dunno what is going to happen when I actually get to goal.

The other issues I don't have though.

Oh also this one is not a physical thing but people talk to you more. At my all time heaviest weight I was a 376 pound invisible woman. Now I am 198.8 and people talk to me in passing or in line at the store or walking down the sidewalk. People acknowledge me and hold open doors way more often these days.

I noticed that at just 42 pds down from 271 to 229. But it's more like they actually look at me when speaking in passing than they did before.

I have found that since I lost weight, it seems like fewer people talk to me, I think I was more approachable when I was fatter. My RBF is on 100 now. People still talk to me more than most people though. That extrovert life...

@@tamila0624 You need to be at a steady weight before considering plastic surgery. I would suggest counseling to get your food issues under control. Go back to basics. If you continue eating sweets - you will continue to gain.

Does anyone regret that they had their procedure done?

I do not have a shred of regret. I am thankful everyday for this gift and truly feel like I've been given my life back.

No regrets! Even with the sore tailbone, weird poop habits, and unsolicited comments, it was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
