LOW BMI BANDING: Am i crazy?

Recommended Posts

I was a lower BMI too. 180lbs. LB was best decision of my life.

No - you are not crazy.

As for Adderall and Ritalin... well, I used to take those and for me they stripped my personality and put me into a robotic mode. Now, that was great for me in law school but not after I entered the workforce. I have found Focalin XR to be amazing, and have been on it for 3.5 years. I take 20 mg in AM and 10mg in PM (if needed). Something you may want to consider if you run into problems with other medications.

I had a BMI of 32 when i went in for a consulation. I actually drank a liter of Water to put on a few pounds before the doctor weighed me, but it didn't matter anyways. I was a cash pay so they were more lenient with me. At 5' 4" and 185 I had gained and lost the same 60 pounds over and over again since 2003. I tried 30 different diets, half of which were expensive and supervised, but nothing was lasting. I didn't have any co-morbidities but I knew it was only a matter of time. My sister and mother were both morbidly obese and I was struggling. I paid out of pocket and have decided this is my "new car". I'm only a couple days out from the surgery but can all ready tell this is the best decision I have ever made.

You have listened to doctors pushing a unnecessary surgery when they have a financial stake in whether you get the surgery or not. This is called a conflict of interest and the opinion of such a person should never be relied on no matter who the person happens to be, even a doctor! Find a doctor that has NO financial stake in LAP Band surgery at all and get his/her opinion. I personally think anyone that has unnecessary surgery is crazy. It is not necessary because you are overweight. Being overweight is not a situation that requires surgery to fix. To think it does is admitting you have NO will power and NO self discipline. If you truly have no will power and no self discipline you have much bigger problems than just being overweight. I hope you don't take this post as an attack, it is not one. I care or I wouldn't have posted this message. With God all things can be done, including losing weight without any surgery.

Every doctor you go to has a financial interest in you. You are paying them. Granted, not every one is a surgeon, and the OP could seek the opinion of primary care and other doctors for their opinions of this treatment for obesity. But a PCP may say, see me monthly and I will oversee your diet, and you can work with the nutritionist in my group, and use this diet food I sell, too. That is a financial interest in a patient not having this procedure. It works both ways.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
