Stomach made too small from surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone- I'm having my surgery soon. I have a question can your stomach be made too small where you look sickly from too much weight loss? Has this happened to anyone? If this occurs what does the doctors do?

If you are being sleeved, and you have a skilled/experienced surgeon, you really don't have any reason to worry about this. When you are sleeved, your entire digestive system remains intact. The only thing that is removed is the stretchy part of the stomach.

Malnutrition should only be a danger if you do not follow your post-op program. As long as you get enough Protein and fluids and take your Vitamins and supplements as directed post-op you will be fine. Long-term, you just need to eat nutritiously.

Many people with ulcers or cancer have their entire stomach removed with an operation called gastrectomy. They go on to lead healthy, normal lives and do not waste away, lose too much weight, or look sickly. They may need to work with a dietitian to make sure they get enough calories and Protein but in general that is a minor concern. So do not worry about your stomach being accidentally made too small, you would do just fine even if your surgeon came to the OR drunk and decided to cut your whole stomach out just for laughs.

With the sleeve surgery, not likely. With the bypass, it's not the size of the pouch but the malabsorbtion that usually causes an issue.

My surgery was 9/13/13 I weighed 265.... today I weigh 135... I've been very sick lately every1 keeps saying I look sick. I only eat about 3 or 4 bites at a time. Thts all I can hold. I don't think it has anything to do with my sleeve surgery I've had a few surgeries since...and something definitely messed me up. I'm wasting away... went from a size 22-24 to a size small

I am so sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties. Have you talked to a physician about this? Your surgeon? A gastrointestinal specialist?

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
