Need a little advise and motivation please

Recommended Posts

Hi all!!!

I have not been on in a few months. I will be 2 years post op on July 2nd. I was doing well there for a while up until about a month ago. I just seem that I am not motivated any more. I am starting to become addicted to food again and become an emotional eater again. I do not want that. I am trying to get my Water in but not getting as much as I should. I have become lazy. I have gained about 16 lbs. It does not seem like much but my clothes are starting to get tight on my again.

Anyone have any suggestions? I belong to Kaiser Permanente now but did not have the surgery with them. Do you think that going to a support group may help me? I will never let my self get as big or even close to what I use to be. I wear a size 10-12 right now but before gaining that 16lbs I was an 8-10. Just need a little bit of encouragement or advise please.

Thank you all and have a very blessed night.

:)

I definitely think going to a support group would be a great idea. You might also want to see if you can see a therapist one-on-one and/or consider attending some recovery groups (like OA.org).

In the meantime, go back to basics and also see if you can make an appointment with a NUT to talk about updating your food plan.

You absolutely positively need to get counseling. The farther out I get (2 1/2 years) the more convinced I am that long term success can only come with professional mental help. After all, surgery did not address WHY any of us became obese. The physical restriction and initial enthusiasm that first year or so is simply a bandaid for much deeper psychological issues. Without addressing the "whys" and learning how to change our behaviors, most people will go right back to doing all the same things they did to become fat in the first place. If you don't make some changes pretty quick, those 16 pounds will soon become 40 and then 60 and then 100, because the more you regain the less motivated you will become.

Your insurance should pay for psych visits. And it doesn't even have to be with a bariatric specialist. I started seeing a therapist for my grief and depression almost two years after my VSG. But the things I am learning are helping me in ALL aspects of my life, including how to feel and live with my emotions, rather than feeding them.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I know this surgery is not a fiscal, and I'm only 12 days out, so posts like this are very helpful. I can totally see how easy it may be to return to the emotional eating part. Tell me, for the two years did you replace the reading with something else for emotional support, or just use will power to avoid eating out of emotion. I need to change my mindset so this doesn't happen to me because it ALWAYS had after losing weight. I pray you find the answer and I thank you for sharing your struggles. Makes me realize this WLS is not a cure all.

One good book that I often recommend is: Eat it Up! by Connie Stapleton.

Good idea. @@dannilynn1 if you aren't quite ready to jump full bore into therapy, maybe attending the support group meetings and sitting down with some good self help books would be a good start. besides this one, I found Cynthia Alexander's 'The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery" helpful. As well as "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life" by Steven Hayes and the handbook offered through www.smartrecovery.org

Exercise in or outside the house. I do both, Zumba in the am after little one is in school then 3days out with friends. Try adding flavors to your Water lemon lime fruit anything you think might help. Think back to where yoy came from and promise yourself no make a pack never to go back. I'm only 6 months out but vowed to never go back. Plus gave away all my cloths so lol

You made the first step - acknowledging you need help and reaching out in this forum! It seems your gut feeling to go to a support group is the right step. I agree with all of the above comments. Stay strong and keep us updated! You can do this!!!

I try not to focus on results, but on inputs.

But, I do reward myself when I hit milestones.

One of my favorite rewards is getting a massage. Another is a mani/pedi.

I am in desperate need of a good massage. Guess I need to hit another milestone, eh?

Yes, unless it is a dire emergency! I have no problem with emergency massages!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
