UNC or Duke for surgery?

Recommended Posts

@@gina171, I asked for a tentative surgery date on my first appt with Dr. Yoo because of work issues. My insurance required a 3 month supervised diet. Here's my timeline:

1/7: Met with Nutritionist, did Psych evaluation and met with Dr Yoo

1/8: blood work, chest X-ray, EKG

2/1: started supervised diet. My bad there, I was slow to get signed up.

3/2: endoscopy. Found an ulcer. Started meds.

5/1: repeat endoscopy. Ulcer gone and finished supervised diet.

5/3: paperwork into Insurance for approval

5/8: approved

5/26: all day pre op meetings

6/1: surgery which was the original date Dr Yoo gave me in Jan.

See you on Tuesday! How fun that we get to meet. I'll be the one with the big curly red hair. Hard to miss.

I didn't know about it until just now! I think I might be able to come.

Ha! I am pre-op but I've been assigned Dr. Yoo, too.

Did you like him NJGirl? Did you have sleeve or bypass?

I have the sleeve. I changed my mind at the last minute. I was originally set to get the bypass, but as I continued to research both it seemed that the sleeve was a better choice for me.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
