I am 5' 2" 199# with a BMI of 36. I have been approved for surgery. I am torn between having VSG and gastric bypass. I understand that surgery is a tool but I am so worried that the VSG will not be restrictive enough and feel the potential for regain is higher

Than with the bypass. I have such craving for sweets that I feel I need a physical deterrent to keep me on the path of a healthy lifestyle. Any suggestions?

Do you have any medical issues - GERD, diabetes? Your cravings may change after surgery but maybe Bypass is the way to go if you need a deterrent. I would be concerned of 2 things with Bypass - the malabsorption of Vitamins and minerals and with a lower BMI - losing too much. What does your Bariatric Team recommend? My program has a NUT, Psych and surgeon who all help decide what surgery would be best based on their evaluations of the patient.

Thank you- I have sleep apnea and mild GERD. No official diabetes. I have a friend who had VSG 3 years ago and has put back on 20# because she slipped back into old habits. The VSG is new so there isn't a lot of data to indicate long term success. I know that even with the malabsorption risks with bypass the data indicates long term success

@@lakegirlmn I haven't had surgery yet but will be having the sleeve. I am not a sweet eater so we didn't think I'd benefit anymore from Bypass. You can slip back into old habits with both surgeries - they both are only tools to help us. If you have GERD and are a sweet eater - I would think Bypass would be better for you.

I'm almost as your measurements

I'm 5' 2.5" and I weight 211# my BMI is 38

I'm a stress and a sweets eater

I'm a plastic surgeon and my figure is very important for me and my clients

I hv been obeese my whole life

This year I got hypertension and knee pain and decided that enough is enough

My surgeon who is a colleague recommended mini gastric bypass obviously bcs I'm a sweet and stress eater

But I totally refused it I'm a surgeon and I know that is it a malanatomical procedure and I can't handle malabsorption syndrome or dumping syndrome!! My friend had 3 car accidents due to damping syndrome and almost died

So I promised myself and him that I will control myself post op and I hope I can control the cravings after I start loosing weight and seeing results

I am opting for the RNY. I do not trust the temptation and want to be sure that I am selecting a procedure best suited for my success. It is a difficult decision no matter what you decide. Good luck to you!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
