Hi everyone! I've done everything I need to before having surgery except using my cpap machine. I got it over a month ago and I could not sleep with the full facial mask so I ended up switching it for a nasal mask. Is anyone using their cpap now before surgery? I have to wear it strictly for 30 days. I'm so close to the finish line but I'm having trouble keeping this mask on for at least 4 hours.

I wear mine. I didn't use it Sunday night and slept like crap. It took about a week to get used to the mask. They will cancel your surgery - so you have to suck it up.

It does get better, I promise. Keep trying new styles of mask, but I think it takes 4 days to get properly used to it.

Also, my CPAP rep gave me a TON of adjustment tips, and if you are monitored remotely, like me and several others on here, it only needs 4 hours in a 24-hour period. She told me to put it on while doing computer work at home or watching TV to get my hours in and get used to wearing it. If you can't necessarily "sleep" with it on, you'll at least meet the 4-hour minimum to get the surgery done:-)

Thank you! I am aware that if I don't use it then I won't be cleared for surgery so that's a huge reminder. Thanks for the tips heather! I will definitely wear it around the house to get used to it and get my hours in. I hope I get used to it. I wonder if I have to wear it DURING surgery? Something I've got to ask my surgeon lol

I would be careful wearing it during the day - they can see the times worn. It's like Big Brother - I used to get texts from mine saying I hadn't worn it for 2 days (I went away and didn't take it). I don't think you will wear during surgery but after in recovery and post-op.

I got mine 7 days ago, my surgery date is June 8th. I didn't want it, but it is required and I have to say that seven days I've got a new attitude about it! I'm using a nasal pillow mask, least bulky of the choices and I'm sleeping again. It's been literally years since I've slept well. Just one more bonus for going through this process to get my sleeve!

My surgery date is coming up quick May 19th! I got my cpap machine almost 2 months ago and its been the greatest thing ever. Still struggle on occasion with wanting to rip it off in the middle of the night because I usually sleep on my stomach and can't do so with the mask.

I use a nasal mask and its definitely taken getting used too. I can honestly say that I never knew how tired I was until after a few days of using the mask. I felt so rested and had so much more energy. Keep pushing to use it every night even if you start with using it for 4-6 hours out of the night.

I fell asleep last night without putting it on (guess I was that tired) and I'm exhausted today. Can't wait to see if once I lose more weight if my sleep apnea will go away or not.

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! How exciting. I was supposed to have surgery at the end of this month but because I have to use my cpap machine for at least 30 days it has been pushed back until end of June or early July. But that's okay because I know how bad I want this surgery and how important it is for me to use my cpap before surgery.

Sometimes I feel as if the air blowing out is too hard and I get overwhelmed. Maybe it's all in my mind. I mentioned it to the tech and she said that's what the doctor ordered and that I'll get used to it. Did you experience that the first time you used your machine? What type of mask do you use?

Took me forever to get used to it. Now I can't sleep w/o it. I have nasal pillows cuz I can't stand something over my mouth and nose. But have had it for over 10 years so not an issue for being approved for surgery. Just had to have another sleep study done. Hopefully surgery in June!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
