I can't eat hardly anything that I used to. The strangest thing. I had read your tastes can change around 6 months but that it only lasts a while. I just passed my 1 year mark and have lost 92 lbs. regular food all tastes the same. I eat pina colada yogurt, Protein Bars, Premier Protein drinks and a boat load of candy lol. I have never cared about candy and sweets. and I'm still losing weight! My diabetes is gone and my A1C is in the 5s from 12. It's crazy. Has anyone else experienced not being able to eat regular food?

@@kmvalade - my taste buds have changed a bit.

I think I just prefer to eat something that REALLY tastes good, instead of something that doesn't really taste good. The 20% of my stomach only wants, legitimate, GOOD tasting food.

I find I really like my food seasoned a lot more now.

I'm 6 weeks out and what I ate for the last 6 weeks is not working for me anymore. I can stand cheese strings, almonds, ham, and chicken is borderline. Ugh.

I am almost 4 weeks out from surgery (April 13th) and am on pureed foods. I was very surprised to find my tastes changing. I'm wondering what makes this happen? Is it loss of some hormones in the stomach? Anyhow my toothpaste which must have some sort of fake sugar in causes nausea and almost makes me throw up. That was a shock. Never bothered me before.

Also I seem to crave certain foods, adn then when I have them mashed up and pureed, they don't give the same pleasure they did before. Not sure if this is because there is no texture to them in my mouth?

I was craving a cheesesteak so we got some; I threw away the bun, and pureed a little of the contents since the meat is really lean . It tasted fantastic to have 1/2 cup of this old favorite. Also craved stouffers mac n cheese so pureed some fo this and it was great. But yes as some have mentioned, a little contained lasts you several meals. My frig has tons of little rubbermaid containers in there of partial meals. So preop people, make sure you have lots of tupperware or Rubbermaid 1 cup containers - your refrigerator is going to collect portions of smoothies and meals you can't finish in one sitting!

I'm not really sure I understand your post. You are saying regular food tastes the same, yet you can't eat it. You say you eat a boat load of candy yet you don't care for candy and sweets.

Congrats on losing the 92 lbs. Are you still losing ?

I've found that everything tastes the same to me....or perhaps even a little better. I'm thinking it's better because I eat slower and savor things much more than before. I'm not trying to load up at meals....simply enjoy what I select and eat that and that alone.

I mainly eat meats, eggs, chicken, fish, shrimp, oysters, steak and steamed vegetables.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
