6 month Insurance Requirement ( weight requirements )

Recommended Posts

I just finished my sixth month required weight in for my insurance . Initially my surgeon told me I could not gain or lose I could only really stay between one or two pounds the most . But after my first weigh in I was just losing weight the second and third month like two or three pounds without even doing anything and then my fourth month I gained out of nowhere and then the last two months I was back down to my initially weight but I have obstructive sleep apnea and was told I even start choking in my sleep and my oxygen level get as low as 1.4 which is really bad and they think my insurance will definitely approve me because I'm 21 ( very young ) and have a serious health issue like that . But I'm nervous they will deny me because of how my weight fluctuating . My insurance is also blue cross blue shield ny

You can Google your health plan's requirements and find out for yourself. Knowledge is power. You've taken responsibility for making a positive, life-changing decision. Take the responsibility for knowing what the requirements are and you won't be at the mercy of your imagination.

I know the requirements and all they require is a monitored 6 month weight loss . It's just the surgeons say there is a possibility they can deny you if your weight goes up and down . It depends on if they want to approve it or not so I was trying to see if anyone else went through the same thing .

It doesn't work that way. Denials have to be based on the criteria. If the criteria doesn't specify no loss or gain, then that isn't grounds for denial.

So your weight is back to the same weight as when you started the six months? Since sleep-apnea is considered a co-morbidity, I would think you'd qualify if your BMI is high enough. One of the surgeons I've talked to (still haven't chosen one) said more and more plans are dropping the six months of dieting restriction because it's not a great indicator of success. The same surgeon also said he's seen the insurance companies be extremely fickle about approvals and that it's NOT as cut and dried as it is supposed to be. Talk to the insurance coordinator at your surgeons office. This is what they do and they should be able to help you interpret the insurance guidelines in your specific case. Then call your insurance and have them send you their rules in writing. That's really the only way to know because every plan is different. It's maddening!

I have the same insurance in NY.... I've read and re-read the policy, mine doesn't even say it has to be medically supervised and it does not mention anything about weight loss... My surgeon said its your weight about the first appointment that gets submitted, he requires weight loss before he'll do the surgery.

My surgeon also told me it is the weight at first appt that matters. I hope he is right because I have lost some weight and am now below 40 BMI. I would be livid if I am denied because I lost weight.

All this will I be approve or won't I be approved just adds a whole layer of nonsense to getting treatment... He only mentioned the pre surgery weight loss in my brief interaction with him at the seminar he conducted... Will be having my consultation this Wednesday. I'm sure like me your probably an expert at loosing weight, it's keeping it off that's the problem. Every time I lose weight it must send out a search team because it quickly finds me again lol...

Yes I'm right at the BMI border line, I tore my calf muscle about a week ago so that has made walking painful so not being active will keep my bmi at 40.

That is MY biggest fear that I start losing weight and fall below 40 BMI because I was barely that at initial weight in like 40.7 and this is my month 3 of 6. Yes I have been walking more 3 times a week, yes I am eating a lot healthier but my weakness is Starbucks even though I have switched to "skinny" but then I eat stuff that I really do not even enjoy like BREADS and high starchy foods because I have been afraid of my BMI falling so my weight has literally been the exact same month after month. It's hard to get in touch with the coordinator at my surgeons office for clarification and when I call my insurance company (Meritain) they just say 6 months of supervised diet without ANY gain but it still makes me nervous after reading some of the other requirements out there. Losing 1-2 pounds a week and such just FREAKS ME OUT!

So where are you now with this? Did they go by the starting weight?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
