Pre-Op Diet OMG! I'm Dying!

Recommended Posts

Well, not literally dying and I hope I look back on this and say it was no big deal. BUT, this sure sucks right now. Today is day four and I feel weak, SUPER Crabby and kind of in a daze. Not to mention that I am SOOOO HUNGRY! I get 800 - 1000 calories and am supposed to try to do it all with Protein shakes. .I can have sugar free Jell-o and chicken broth if I need to as well. Boy is this ever difficult. So far I am having four-200 calorie shakes, 2-3 cups chicken broth and 2-3 cups of sugar free Jell-o. If I could do this type of thing, I wouldn't need surgery! Any advice or support would be awesome!. Maybe I need shakes that are lower in carbs to cut through the withdrawals quicker? The ones I'm using twice a day have 17g carbs each. The other two shakes only have 4g carbs each. HELP!

It's a beast, but the only way past it is through it. Your nigher-carb shakes may not be helping you here.

You can do this, it's a means to an end. Hang in there!

Premier Protein shake is a good Protein Shake, its delicious once you get used to the taste like a thick chocolate milk. (If you get chocolate) it has 30 grams of Protein and like the others said its only 160 calories. Here's some other tips, stay away from television (those food commercials will drive you nuts, I took some other's advice and made friends with Netflix) try not to be around actual food or people eating food if you can help it. Find a hobby or something to keep your mind preoccupied, or sleep when you can (that's how I got through my pre op diet). Look at it as a big test, because this is one of the biggest if not the biggest obstacle right now. Hang in there you can do it and afterward you'll feel like a champ.

Omg you poor thing!!! I've posted this before- same thing. Told my doc there was NO WAY I could get through this. They allowed unlimited non starchy veggies (raw) to snack on. Worth a call. Green peppers, celery and I became best buds!!!

The 4th day is usually the turning point. After 2-3 days your body enters ketosis which has all the physical symptoms you mentioned... fatigue, headache, hanger.... but then once the switch is complete, it gets a *little* easier. Still not easy though... it pretty much sucks the full two weeks.

I've been liquid for 2 weeks. 550 calories or less daily. Full blown ketosis. Crabby, hungry, tired, emotional. Headaches, body aches, nausea. Oh, and PMS on top of it all. Surgery is Wednesday. If I can do it, anyone else can. I'm using the Premier shakes as well. chocolate is the favorite, followed by strawberry. Not a fan on the vanilla but I add some sugar free Chocolate Syrup. Someone mentioned a sugar free cherry syrup which I want to try. Hang in there. You can do it!

I not allowed to have that many carbs. I use the Premier Protein with 5 g of carbs. It also has 30g of Protein too. Either way, this liquid diet sucks!

Im jealous of you guys...you get shakes. Im only allowed Isopure [clear Protein ] broth and Jello. I had a hard time the first day, second day was a breeze, third day I found out insurance denied me so I had some yogurt and scrambled eggs. But, Im going to stay pretty close to this diet for awhile just because of the health benefits. Im down 27lbs since January, 6 of which were the last 3 days. Im pretty bummed about the denial but we are fighting it and shooting for July. And yes I agree on giving up the high carb shakes. They wont help curb your appetite and will damper tge results of liver shrinking.

I have to do 7 days with 2 shakes and one small meal (add veggies during the day if needed) then 8 days liquid only so shakes are out for me.

Have you tried bone broth? It typically has more Protein in it than the regular broths. Also, how about adding unflavored Protein powder to the broth you're eating? That's allowed by my NUT and is supposed to help with hunger.

I still have a little over a month before I start mine, Lord help us all. LOL

I'm right there with you, I'm on day 9 and everything sucks. I don't want any more shakes or Jello, and kinda wanna throw my Water bottle across the room. I'm tired and cranky, I'm PMSing and my husband just got laid off from his job. I hate everything right now.

Monday is my day. Less than a week. It's not fun, but we can all get through it.

@@Megall9 Monday is my day too! That is if the freaking insurance company gives the approval. One week to go and they still haven't signed off. I am calling daily and can't seem to get a straight answer! Good luck to you and to all of us!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
