Surgery soon and reflecting on my journey so far

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, my name is Kayla. I'm a 30 year old musician, singer, wife, and mother. My Gastric sleeve procedure is scheduled for 4/27.

I wasn't always as big as I am. (HW:314) in fact, when I met my husband nearly 12 years ago, I weighed 129lbs. At 5'8" that's kind of the low end weight-wise, but I wasn't healthy. Once I felt safe and loved, I let go and started eating again... Like mad. I ate on 150lbs in two years... I went up and down from there. So for the last decade, I've been hovering, on average, between 280 and 300. I did get down to 220 after becoming a vegetarian for a year and a half after a bad case of food poisoning (as with many of us, I have some issues that manifest in my strange relationship with food). When I got pregnant, my body demanded meat. By delivery, I was 305lbs. I dropped about 20lbs and put it back on. My body began to feel major consequences of all the weight. I stopped playing quidditch and indoor soccer which I had done up to last year.

Finally, as my son began running faster and faster, I decided I wanted to keep up with him and to do the stuff he wanted to do... I went into cooper bariatric on October 22nd, 2015. They told me I had to be nicotine free for 4 months, I quit on the 23rd. Since then, I have completed all the hoop-jumping and here I am, drinking only Protein shakes and Clear liquids.

As a performer, it's hard to look at myself and then present what I feel is inadequate, to others. I have been learning, albeit slowly, to love myself. I wrote a song to fluff myself up. If you want to hear it or see the video, I'm happy to post a link, but I don't want to assume.

Good luck on 37th! It will be great and you can get back to playing soccer and your with your son soon! I had my surgery on 2/1/2016 I'm down 50 lbs since my hospital weight. The fist month was the tough but it gets easier and better soon after that. I feel the thing that was the most helpful for me was after being able to swallowing pills I started using the best Vitamins I could find after starting them I had more energy and felt better! Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
