How many calories per day in the first few months?

Recommended Posts

I need some advice from some bariatric veterans out there...I am almost 4 weeks out and worry that I'm already doing this wrong.

I've been following my NUT's instructions, and am on the soft food stage (scrambled eggs, purees, tuna, yogurt, etc). She told me to continue doing the Protein shakes (60-80g daily) and incorporate two or three 2-4 tbsp meals in addition to this. She did not mention the amount of calories I should be getting daily.

Well. I worry because it's already about 400 with the Protein Shakes (sometimes more if I use almond or skim milk), and then adding the small meals per day I am nearing 700 calories daily, and a lot of things I've read and heard is to try and stay between 300-600 calories per day. And this is at the very minimum amount of food, so I worry I'm already messing up!

So my question is, what calorie range should I be within at this point, and how do people get all their Protein without going over?

(Some of the meals I make are 1 scrambled egg, salsa and cheese with a tiny bit of avocado mushed in / tuna and hardboiled egg with mustard and paprika / oikos triple zero greek yogurt / tilapia and mushed cauliflower)

What sort of daily meals do you guys do?

***ALSO, as it gets further down the road, say 6 months+, how many tablespoons or ounces of food would you say you eat in a meal? I'm just hoping to get a frame of reference ;) THANKS!!

I was around 400-500 at that time, but my shakes were less calories than yours. Every nut and doctor I have spoken too agrees that the more calories you can get in, especially in the beginning when your body is taxed by surgery the most, the better! I think you're doing just fine. :) Especially since most of your calories are in liquid form. I honestly wouldn't worry about it at all. 700-800 calories was the goal that was given to me and I was nowhere near it.

Okay that makes me feel a bit better. What Protein Shakes do you recommend? I usually use Unjury or Syntrax and they are about 100calories per scoop.

And thank you!

I've pretty much always stuck with Premier Protein. 160 a shake, three shakes a day, and I would be at 480 cals a day. Getting those three and as much Water as I could took literally my entire day, and even sitting on my butt doing no physical activity, that was not enough calories to sustain me. Even now, 700 calories is not enough to sustain me. I can function but I'm exhausted and my muscles tire quickly. You're still taking in way less than you're body needs, which is why we lose so quickly. We're burning our surplus. :P

I stopped Protein Shakes around a month in. My dietician wanted me getting Protein in via food. Lucky because I was sick of the shakes after the pre op phase lol

The most important things after surgery are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. Meals are secondary because your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Exercise is also important. Weight loss after RNY surgery is driven by meal volume control rather than caloric restriction. This article describes my experience with RNY gastric bypass surgery during the "Weight Loss" phase. There are recipes at the end. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

It's strange that you were not given meal volume limits as a function of weeks/months post-op prior to surgery. My guidelines started me out at 4 tablespoons (1/4 cup or 2 ounces) per meal for the first 8 weeks following surgery and slowly increased that to 16 tablespoons (1 cup or 8 ounces) at 1 1/2 years post-op. At 4-6 month post-op, my meals were limited to 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup or 4 ounces) per meal.

@Cervidae : My doc said that the Premiere Protein shakes were good but that we should only count them for half the Protein as is listed on the nutritional information, because it was something about the fact that they (and things like Muscle Milk) are concentrate, and bypass patients won't be able to break it down as well. Otherwise those are wonderful!

@James Marusek : my NUT did give me volume recommendations 2-4 tbsp for this first month, but didn't give any calorie recommendations. Maybe it's just not that important in this phase? Thanks for those recipes!

Congratulations on a terrific start! I had a very long discussion with my nut about premier Protein shakes mostly because someone else brought up the same issue you mentioned.

My nut recommended Premier Protein for me.

When I told her that I was told we could not absorb all of the Protein in one shake she actually pulled out a diagram that showed exactly where different nutritional elements are absorbed. While it is true that Calcium is malabsorbed, it is not true about protein. Calcium as well as other Vitamins are absorbed in a different part of the digestive system. A 30gram Protein Shake will have no problem. That has been validated with all of my post op labs completed in the last 19 months.

I am at goal and Premier Protein is the only shake I drink once per day. I get the rest from food.

I also had this conversation with my surgeon because I was worried and wanted a second opinion. I wish I would have taj

Ken a copy of that document but it was the only one she had and it had personal notes written all over it.

The other thing I would add is that you don't need to even worry about calories at this stage. Just focus on Water and Protein and take your Vitamins. By 8 weeks I was no more than 1/4 cup of food (think about that measurement as already chewed up food.

At the one year mark I really started to focus on calories because your volume will go up and by this stage you are trying different things. I am at the stage where I can eat about a cup of food unless it is a really dense Protein and then it is less. Or a salad I might get in 1 1/2 to 2 cups depending on the protein I add.

I am 19 months post op and reached goal in March. I am trying to increase calories and it is difficult for me. I currently range between 900 and 1200 per day. 70 grams protein, less than 100 grams carbs.

@Djmohr Thank you! That's awesome news! I really can't stand having to use the shaker and the potential for the clumps. I've had the Premier Protein and it's delicious! I think I'll give that a go for a while since it seems to work for so many people!

Also thanks about the heads up for the calories. I think I'm just going to chill out and not worry about it and just follow what my NUT said. It's working, obviously, but I just was worrying myself about it so I am just going to step back and take a deep breath and keep on keeping on ;)

Great job at getting to goal! I can't WAIT!!! :) :) :)

PS: I JUST remembered that today is officially my one monthaversary! Down 32lbs since surgery date! Ridiculous!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
