Anyone with GERD have VSG?

Recommended Posts

I have my first WLS appointment later this month and am really leaning toward the sleeve but have heard it makes existing GERD worse. The surgeons office said they will correct my hernia at the time of surgery. Anyone have experience with GERD and having a sleeve?

I had GERD before- need medication- and still need it. It is not worse. I did have a hiatal Hernia so that may have help me overall.

I have GERD. I had to have an esophageal manometry completed to see if the reflux was too bad to have the sleeve. That was the worst test ever, but I'd rather have that then increased reflux after the sleeve. I'm still waiting on results.

I had to look up the procedure. The surgeons office mentioned a scope. Now I am thinking that is what they were talking about.

I "had" GERD. I had my hernia repaired at the same time I was sleeved.

NO MORE GERD!

Happy Day!!!! :)

@@bac2u This was definitely the scope they mentioned. Gagging wasn't the word! I felt like I was choking. I was only supposed to swallow on command. Of course, with a long scope through my nose and into my esophagus and stomach, I swallowed as a reflex. Each time I did that the test started over. Ugh! 1 hr 15 mins later I was done. By the way, it was only a 20-35 min test! Smh

I have GERD and have been on med for it for years. I can't miss a dose or it's really bad. My PA told me this week at my #6 nutritional visit that my sliding hiatal hernia will be repaired during surgery, and then I can expect to be free of GERD. :D

Horrible gerd preop. Have had no trouble post. Now I'm still on a ppi, which my surgeon requires, but I was on one for years preop and it was still uncontrolled, so much better!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
