Calorie guidelines ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone - I'm about 2 weeks post op and feeling great! I had my post op appt today and my dr cleared me for soft foods and transition to full foods at my own pace since I've been eating soft foods for 5 days already. He also cleared me for full exercise.

I put my food into Myfitnesspal and I'm only eating about 600 calories a day - I'm meeting my Protein (60-80g) and Water goals (64oz) each day - i did 30 mins on the elliptical today and burned 330 calories so really my calorie count for the day is down to 270 is this ok? I feel fine - no headaches or anything

It's probably a little low...

Of course, I'm no nutritionist...

Do you not have one?

Or at least access to one?

Maybe give the surgeon's office a call and see if they provide that as part of their follow-up service...

Or if they can at least recommend one...

Good luck..

Let us know the outcome...

It sounds about the same as where I was at 2 weeks. The first 4 weeks, I was around 400-600 calories a day. 2nd month, I was at 600-800 calories a day. 3rd month, I was 800-1000 calories a day and have stayed that way for the last couple of months. I'm 5 months out and lose 2-3 lbs a week pretty consistently.

All that being said, I really recommend that you focus first on Protein and hydration. Low Protein will sap your energy. The calories are less important than the protein (unless you are snacking on sugar!) Also, don't sweat the fat too much. Your restriction will keep that in check for now.

I found I was walking enough to slow my weight loss down, which to tell the truth I would eventually get there anyway, but I did up my calories a little and cut back a smidge on the walking and am loosing at a faster pace now. - so play around with it a little and see how you do. I would allow a week for each small change to evaluate.

Christina - what was your calorie to walking ratio? If I'm not on the elliptical I try to walk for an hour to an hour and a half - 4 miles or so - I'm not getting tired - feeling pretty good - and tolerating a full diet already (haven't tried crunchy things yet) I'm just don't want my body to go into starvation mode and pack the pounds on

well, I am only able to eat about 800 -1000 a day. Usually closer to 800. So walking 5 miles was too much, burning at least 500 calories a day - just from the recorded exercise. I have found I have a *lot* of energy since surgery most days, which I attribute to having normal blood sugars now.

I was thinking about this today. I get my Protein in, and fluids, but when I account for my walking I usually get under 200 calories. I am still early pre-op, I assume as I can eat a little more in it will even out.

I am following surgeons plan, so I assume they realize how little calories that ends up. Although sure explains being so tired all the time.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
