Just in the beginning stages for getting a sleeve.

Recommended Posts

I am 55 and in the beginning stages for getting the Sleeve. I just had an UGI and I am within 5 pounds of my surgery weight. I totally see how support groups are our way of succeeding. Worried about eating out or rather not wanting to eat out but my husband loves eating out. Will this change in habits hurt us? We are empty nesters trying to find common interests and not being able to eat (really) will this hurt us? Anyone else had / has that concern?

Welcome!

I haven't really run into an issue eating out. I am single and actually cook more and eat more at home now than I did pre-op, but I still eat out on occasion.

You probably won't want to when you are still on liquids, but it is doable if you plan ahead and make good choices.

My number one priorities are Protein and Water.

When you are on liquids you can usually find a clear Soup at a decent restaurant.

Once you are on soft foods it gets easier. Choose a good protein: cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, soft fish, refried Beans, etc. You can also eat soft cooked veggies, but eat your Protein first.

When you are cleared for denser Proteins then turkey and chicken are great. I even get shrimps, scallops, pork tenderloin, etc.

Tougher meats like steak are doable further out.

Just choose a good protein and a non-starchy vegetable and you will be fine. I usually have lots to take home unless I order an appetizer portion.

Unless it is fried fast food place, there is usually one or two things on the menu that are decent choices.

Best of luck with your surgery and your recovery.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.

My husband and I eat out often. I wasn't really able to do *too* much eating out before I was back on solid foods. My options were very limited. But once I was cleared for solid foods at 40 days post-op, I haven't had any issues finding things to eat out. If I am ordering my own entree, I will ask for a to-go box at the beginning of the meal and just transfer the food I know I won't be able to eat into it right away. I often try to just order a high Protein option off the appetizer menu. Or sometimes, if we know an entree will include enough meat for us to split, I will eat half the meat from my husband's entree and between the other half of the meat and all the sides, he still has plenty of food to keep him happy.

My husband & I ate out a lot before my surgery. It was our routine & entertainment. He has cut his food intake in half, & is loosing weight along with me. We are both excited about getting healthier together.

I am more unsure about this surgery the more I read on this sight. Going to a semi local meeting tomorrow.

Why is that? What specifically has you concerned?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
