How long until all requirements are met before insurance approval & Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Ok....I had a few different answers on this (but it's to be expected) so I decided to copy what I wrote on another thread & ask the question: How long does it take before insurance approves & surgery is scheduled???? One person sd it only took a week after everything was submitted for insurance approval & surgery was only 3wks after....another person is STILL waiting for approval after everything was submitted In FEBRUARY?!

This is my story:

I had my 6mo of dieting in with a diff doctor before I decided to go through with Route Y surgery!!

I did my initial meeting & had both of my required dietitian Appts....

all I really have left is to lose more 8lbs (my required 5% that I have to lose before surgery) & my Psychiatric appt for him to give the green light so they can get my insurance to cover surgery....

I've been doing the "Bariatric diet" for like 2mo now (meat, 1cup veggies, 1c fruit 3x times a day: no snacking in between...only Water, crystal light, & sugar free tropical Popsicles are accepted)

BUT ..... I was going to do surgery a couple of years ago & started going through the process only to get SHUT DOWN by the psych!! He was a skinny lad that sd I was not a good candidate for surgery cuz of my depression?!

I mean really depression & obesity kinda go hand in hand?? Just saying....

So anyway out of SPITE I did the "Bariatric Diet" on my own for MONTHS & lost like 70lbs....then I plateaued & stopped dieting only to gain the weight bk & then some...

My fear is that something will go wrong with my upcoming Psyhc appt (since its through the only Bariatric surgeons close to me) or I'll have to jump through more hoops before I'm approved for surgery.! I've worked too hard to be shot down now....

my struggle is I always had bad knees & back since I was young....even when I wore a size 5 & weighed 120lbs.....

I had four kids back to back from 2002-2005 & gained like almost 200lbs!!! Cuz of my disability issues I can't "work it off" like normal people...I'm in constant pain & am pretty much immobile ...so surgery is the only option I see to get most of this weight off me so I can start moving again!!! ????

There really is no set time frame it all depends on your insurance company and how fast they process the materials. The second determination is your surgeons schedule. I would say expect a 6-8 week wait and that way when it happens sooner, you will be set. My insurance was approved in 2 weeks, but I had a 4 week wait after the approval due to the program requirement and my surgeons schedule. No matter the wait it is so worth it in the end.

So did you have surgery yet or are you anxiously waiting

Do you remember how bad the pain was post-op or is it a faded memory cuz of the positive outcome of surgery? That is the only other thing that worries me is post-op pain & excess skin hanging from my belly (& insurance not covering the removal IF I NEED it???)

My approval process took about three weeks. Once that came through they called me to schedule the surgery the next day, with a surgery date about six weeks later due to the surgeon's schedule. At the time it seemed like a really long process, but it gave me time to get prepared, purchase a kitchen scale and smaller plates/bowls, check out Protein powders and drinks, and to read up on what to expect. The first night/next day of pain were the worst and after that my pain was controlled with non-narcotic meds. Walking helped a lot!

I was so worried about pain and the gas. I would highly recommend that you bring some of the dissolvable (under the tongue) Gas X and begin to take them a few hours after surgery, and walk, walk, walk. I was up and walking the hall about 7 hours after my surgery and did so every 2-3 hours (about 45 minutes after pain pill) The only time the pain sucked was coughing. have a pillow that you can hold against your stomach when you cough.

The skin didn't really bother me until now, knowing that summer is coming. I can hide my saggy belly skin, but the thigh skin is harder because it droops to the knees, but I know the difference so it looks worse to me. The I have to laugh because I am so vain now, when before the surgery I was a size 20 and right now I am a size 4. However, I cannot wait for my 18 month post op, so I can see about removing some of the extra skin.

My surgeon's office just sent off the paperwork on Wednesday and she said it should be a 2-3 week wait. I'm not really pressed, because my surgeon wants my a1c under 10, before he will do the surgery. I'm hoping and praying that he will just schedule the surgery and have my alc checked during a pre-op lab work. If not then I'll have to wait until late June or July to have surgery, since I don't see my Endocrinologist again until June.

In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can get this lupron depot induced weight off and start weight training.

The whole process for me took about 9 months from the time of initial consultation until surgery. After the 6 month medically supervised weight loss and exercise program, there was still the pre-op physicals to go through and the second round of pre-op physicals. There was the half day of training classes. There was the waiting for the insurance approval. There was the surgeon's schedule. It sounds like you still have a little ways to go.

One thing that you said was strange. Normally the first step in the program was to undergo the psychological exam. Since you said "upcoming Psyhc appt", it sounds like you did not undergo this initial step. Especially since you had problems with this step initially, I wonder why they did not schedule this at the very beginning.

The pain level will vary by individual. I have a high level of pain tolerance. After surgery when I went into the recovery room, I declined all pain medication. I didn't really need it because at the most my pain level never went above a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. I walked each day for 30 minutes for months prior to surgery and then when I was in the hospital, I walked a lot. That really helps with the recovery process and reducing pain.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
