How often do you see your nutritionist?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just had my VSG on Feb 5...feeling good. I have my first appt with my nutritionist, and just found out insurance only approved me for 3 visits per year. This seems weird to me...I would think since I got the surgery I would be allowed to see the nutritionist more often than just every 4 months to make sure I'm taking in enough nutrients, Vitamins, etc. Or should I be relying on my PCP for that?

But maybe that's just me being overly thinky. What about y'all? How often do you go to your nutritionist?

I had surgery on 9/30/15 and saw my nutritionist on 10/14/15 then not again until April 2016 (six month follow up). After the April visit, I don't have to see her again at all. I'll just have a yearly follow up with my surgeon. I have done labs with my primary care physician and had them sent to the surgeon's office.

I had surgery 12/17/15. I've seen my surgeon 3 times since then and each time I go to the office, I also see the nutritionist either before or after I see the surgeon.

I saw my nut day of surgery. That was 26 months ago. Haven't seen her since. Protein, Water, veggies, Vitamins. Healthy choices, don't eat crap, It's not rocket science.

Bloodwork with your PCP will alert you to Vitamin deficiencies. Make sure you are checking B12, iron/ferritin, Vitamin D, folate and zinc. Blood Calcium levels are worthless to detect deficiencies, only a bone density scan can do that.

I saw mine once before surgery, and at every visit since surgery. In addition I joined the support group that is sponsored by my surgeons office and my NUT leads and attends the monthly meetings. You may find your surgeon does the same and could take advantage of free council that way.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
