ReShape balloon installed today, 2/11/2016

Recommended Posts

Hello

I live 2 hours from my doctor and vomited once in the car ride home this afternoon. I took my medications when in the car and then again when I got home: zofran ,(generic is ondansetron) Phenergan (generic is promethazine) suppositories, and Levsin (generic is hyoscamine).

I've thrown up twice tonight...sigh! I keep telling myself this will get better. I just wish the meds would help. I've sipped a little low cal Gatorade (G2). It tasted good and it only stayed down for 2 hours...until I threw up again.

Please tell me this gets better! I really want this to work.

Call your doctor to make sure the vomiting is normal. I had the sleeve so can't comment on what is normal with the balloon. They may have some suggestions or may call you in another script.

I do know that with the sleeve the first couple of days/week is miserable for some people and it will get better. You have just had anesthesia and a major surgery and not everyone bounces back as quickly as others.

For the sleeve walking a lot helps.

I have been told that Gatorade/G2 can be a bit harsh on the stomach due to the electrolites. Maybe try a different liquid. I know with the sleeve I had to play with temperature. At first I really only could drink hot or warm liquids. My stomach did not like cold or ice cold liquid.

Try herbal tea, try Water with Mio or Crystal Lite, try broth or low salt broth. I loved the broth from WonTon Soup. You may need to play with what your are eating/drinking to see what you will tolerate. Obviously make sure what you try is on your NUT/surgeon's plan for this stage of recovery.

I had the balloon placed 8 days ago. I was vomiting pretty often for the first 3 days and nights but finally stopped. This week I have felt weak but no more nausea. It does get better, but those first few days were rough!

I've had the ballon for 3 months and the first 2 months was severe nausea and vomiting, acid reflux and I was very weak! I'm better now but still have occasional n/v but I don't have to take the meds anymore! I've been exercising regularly at my gym again and I'm down 35 lbs!!!

My reshape procedure is on June 29th. I'm sooooo scared of the nausea and throwing up. Can anyone give me some hope that it's all worth it. My anxiety is killing me!

Is it worth it ... wow ... that's a big question and one that only you can really answer. For me it has been worth it, but that's just me. Fortunately I have not struggled as much as some others. My procedure was on a Wed AM, I threw up at midnight that night, and then at 8am and 10am the next morning. That's it. By the next day (Fri) I was well on the road to recovery. I even went to a restaurant that Sun and ordered Soup, and was back to work Mon. After two weeks I was pretty much back to normal. But some people are sick for weeks and even months.

The problem is that you don't know how it will effect you before you do it so it's a gamble. And you really have to be prepared for the possibility that it's going to be miserable. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. If you can't get your head around that, then it might not be best option for you. I personally got my head around it by reading the clinical trial results. It addresses all of the different side effects and how many people got them on the first few days, the first week, the first month, etc.. Long story short, most people were only miserable for a few days, so the odds were that I'd be OK after a week or two, and that was good enough for me. But that's just me ... you need to decide for yourself. :-)

I hope that helps. Wishing you well, whatever you decide. And if you need any support, please don't hesitate to reach out. Cheers!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
