I'm about 6 weeks in and I'm still having bouts of Constipation followed by diarrhea. Is this normal or something serious?

Well I would hate to tell you not to check with your dr if you are concerned, but I will tell you that 8 months post-op, I still have the same issues. I had bypass though so maybe it is different? My understanding is a high Protein diet can cause that as well as making sure you are very well hydrated.

I'm almost 4 months out and I have this issue off and on and I'm still trying to manage it. What usually happens is that I will be constipated for several days, then I'll eat something with high Fiber and will have diarrhea for an entire day. Then I won't go for several days and it starts all over again. I eat yogurt every day and get in at least 64 oz. of Water daily. I do try to incorporate natural applesauce or drink 50/50 diluted apple juice to help things stay regular. Most weeks are okay, but I go through the constipation/diarrhea thing about 2-3 times per month. I am seeing my surgeon and nutritionist next Thursday and will be bringing this up. But like @@Daisee68 mentioned, a high Protein diet (coupled with taking high doses of iron) can constipate you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
