For those with GERD pre-op . . .

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had GERD pre-op and no problems after surgery without having a hernia repair? I ask this because as I read through so many threads on this subject it seems like most people who saw an improvement in GERD symptoms after getting a sleeve had a hernia repaired at the same time. I have had mild GERD (currently controlled by med) which makes me scared to go with a sleeve. However, both my endoscopy and esophagram looked normal, so I think my doc at my next appt. will say I can go either way.

My mom has GERD, and at times it was really bad. She has been watching her diet and making sure she doesn't go LONG times in between eating and it's gotten better. She's scheduled to have the sleeve next month.

* She also had an endoscopy and esophagram and it looked normal, BUT her surgeon told her that she could still have a hernia even though these were normal and she is going to look for it when she does my mom's surgery next month.

My mom's surgeon is still recommending the sleeve even though she has GERD.

I had it pre-sleeve but it was misdiagnosed as asthma. Kept me up all night every night coughing (no real reflux or heartburn). My pre-op EGD was where they figured it out. Went on PPI immediately and was immediately better, (still preop) They also found a small hernia which they fixed during my sleeve surgery. 2+years post op and I still take the PPI 40mg 2x day and will likely for the rest of my life. No issues.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
