It depends on how far out after surgery you are. Early out I ate a lot of refried Beans. Later, I ate the insides from a taco (sometimes with beans), even further out I was able to do the meat and vegetables from fajita.

Agree with @@Inner Surfer Girl and caution with the taco shell.

I'm 6 months out and I enjoy taco salads - I take all the fixings my family uses minus the shells and put them in a bowl. Yummy!

Why is my bypass so different I can have taco shells, well tortilla chips and salsa. it's in my diet. I'm 7weeks out I just have trouble with meats though if I can't stomach tacos I can't eat meat period I don't like chicken, fish,or pork I'm damn near a vegetarian.

Hmmm... I don't know. Many surgeons and NUTs are different. Most (as you will find on here) recommend higher Protein and lower carb and because Protein is so important for healing and to maintain muscle mass, it is important to get your protein in first and then if you have room veggies and then other carbs. I couldn't have handled taco shells early on, but I can now. BUT chips are a slippery slope for me (as I was reminded last weekend), so it is just something I have to watch. If you do not like chicken, fish or pork, you need to find another way to get your protein in, so be sure you are focusing on that.

What is your protein goal as advised by your NUT? If it helps, mine is in the 80-100g per day range. I am female and 5'10". My carb target is to come from more complex carbs (not simple carbs like chips and non-starchy veggies like corn) and I am just supposed to be carbs less than or equal to my protein grams.

How about dairy? You can try Greek yogurt and if mix Protein powder with it, you can up the Protein. I also eat a lot of cheese. How about eggs? If you can stomach those (some can't), maybe try scrambled or hard boiled? For Jerky, try the Krave brand. it is very tender and easier to tolerate.

Steve,

I'm not sure that the best advice to give someone that recently had the surgery is to go back to the bad habits of consuming high starchy corn or flour shells.

Instead the rule of thumb is to load Protein and try to avoid the crap we used to allow to rule our lives.

I have a close friend who lost hundreds of pounds with the surgery and looked great until she slowly thought she could eat chips and candy and in a short time she's put on half of what she lost.

So sure once in a while eat a taco if your a year or two out. But everyday on anything high starch is poor judgement.

I would be able to eat tacos based on the ingredients, but would never be able to finish an entire taco. I am seven months post op and still cannot eat hamburger. Have you tried a few tortilla chips with a lot of refried Beans, maybe some taco seasoning and shredded cheese? I bet you could even chop a boca burger or veggie burger and add that Protein if you needed more volume. You would still that taco taste, but a bit lighter.

I've seen a taco recipe on pinterest that uses baked cheese slices for the taco shell. Maybe that would be a better option?

I have tried the cheese chips and cheese shells. Problem I found was that with high Protein and low fat and low carbs my shits (as in frequent as they were) were even more solid and painful. Protein makes your shit hard and large. Add in cheese and u back that up further and it gets bigger and harder to get out. Want pain in the ass - have rny, eat 100+ grams of protein, and then add cheese crackers and cheese shells to the mix......you will find the bathroom wall, floor, and ceiling issues though since you'll be in there for quite sometime groaning over the excruciating pain of getting those infant sized turds out of your anus.

Just my opinion.....oh and make sure to have a plunger near by ;-)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
