4 days post op and new to this group....

Recommended Posts

I had my gastric bypass this past Monday for medical reasons. The biggest issue was Barrett's Esophagus Disease, HBP, sleep apnea and I could definitely use the weight loss. The surgeon also operated on a hyatal hernia which has caused me extreme discomfort in my diaphragm, back and shoulder. I get winded if I walk or even talk to much. I almost regret having the hernia repair done. I'm really worried that the weight is coming off but I'm not able to meet the 30 minutes of exercise my surgeon wants me doing each day.

Just wondering if anyone else had both surgeries at once and what the outcome was.

I had revision from lapband to bypass Dec 28 with hernia fix.I am as sore as hell..haven't been able to get in the 30 min of walking but I am up and around.,,back half days at work. The surgery is tough but I have lost 17 pounds and no regrets!!!!! I am working on my Protein and Water intake...everyday gets a little easier. You have to walk to prevent a blood clot..,get up and move.

I got a hiatal hernia repaired during my gastric bypass as well. The hernia was much larger than what the doctor expected so he had to cut it out and then reshape my stomach. All of that being said, my recovery is much slower than others I know who had just the gastric bypass the same day as I do (we keep in touch). If I didn't get it repaired during surgery, it would've had to be repaired down the line which means a SECOND surgery and a second recovery. Also, not repairing it would mean my acid reflux wouldn't have been cured. So, it sucks - yes. Can I walk around the house all day? Nope. But I don't have to get another surgery, AND I don't have all the issues that came along with my hernia. I'm very thankful for that. We'll heal slower, recovery will be harder, but in a few months - we will be SO much better off than we'd have been without the repairs. I'm sorry you're going through this. I had my surgery December 29th btw. Feel better!!! Everything will come in time.

I had my surgery Monday as well and all had the hernia repair just like you I get short of breath but I must say I've had no pain. I walk a lot though in my house and I think this really helped me. Good luck!

As painful as it is at first, walking helps more than anything else. It helps the pain go away faster and prevents blood clots from forming it's very very important.

I had mine Tuesday. The hernia was bad-- a prior surgery had come loose again and the mesh hadn't dissolved (lots of scar tissue). Hernia repair and RNY took 4.5 hours- I'm still extremely tired and not able to walk much but it gets better every day! Still taking pain meds. We should keep up with each other-- I also had mine for medical reasons (Bile Reflux). I was sleeved two years ago so I only need to lose about 35lbs to goal weight.

Thank you all for responding. It's nice to know that I'm not alone on this journey.

Each day is getting a little bit better, the hernia part is still the most painful and I'm continuing pain meds just not as frequent. I discovered a very large bruise on my left side that hadn't been there until today, not sure what that's about.

I'm glad to have heard from all of you and think it's great to keep in touch with about how we are doing. I'm still learning this app so I'm not sure how to private message anyone. If someone knows and wants to keep in touch just let me know how. :-)

Do you mind telling me why it's difficult to walk around the house or get in the exercise they want both of you to do? Do you get winded or very tired? I'm new, so forgive me if I sound clueless!

The pain is pretty intense and radiates through my entire chest, back and shoulder. They actual gave me Valium in the hospital to calm the muscle pain down. Walking makes me winded especially up and down stairs and as I found out today when I left the house for the first time that extreme cold doe not help the pain or the winded feeling.

I also have pain in my neck, back and shoulder. After I'm up for a little I get week in the knees and a little lightheaded. It does get a little better each day. I've noticed that a shower and getting dressed wears me out-- need a nap after. Also my feet are swollen (but getting better each day!) Good news though -- no heartburn/bile reflux and no hunger!

AHHH yes, getting showered and dressed each day is another thing I've taken for granted because now it's an exhausting chore. The no hunger has been nice although I can't wait to actually eat some food with my family as a meal. In one week I'm down 16lbs

Thank you for answering my questions. I hope your feet swelling is not unusual.

Listen, if this makes any of you feel better ... my ex husband had the RNY about 5 years ago now. Now he is fine. But LORD was our journey made from a road of thorns. He had every single complication listed on the release sheet. He was that guy who fell into the low percentage of people who experience every complication to be had.

I won't tell you the details. But for two and a half years the poor man went into surgery sometimes twice a week. Dr. E***** NC Raleigh. *cough* It ruined our marriage, he began to hate the world.

Then after years of telling E***** he was having severe abdominal pain and being ignored and labeled a "drug seeker" by the Gracious PO$, he saw another specialist and found E***** mesh wrapped and knotted around his intestines. The man had to live like that for years after all the he went through being blamed for his own pain. I don't understand why my husband never sued that man.

My husband however signed all those forms relieving E***** of liability. My husband also should have never had it to begin with because he had blood clotting issues.

This could very well explain why I hurt so bad after surgery and why my recovery process has been longer than others. I had RNY on Nov. 17 along with gall bladder removal, hiatal hernia repair, egd and liver biopsy done. I still don't feel at 100% and I am on my 2nd time being out of work. I too had trouble getting in exercise and still don't be a use I have no energy and am fatigued all the time. I'm just waiting on feeling better so that I can get back to exercise. Good luck.

It's been a while since this post. How are you ladies feeling now? I hope better. I ask because I am having RNY, hernia repair and gallbladder removal surgery in May 2016. I want to know how long I should estimate a recovery time and if I will be back to "normal" thx for sharing

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
